Hi.

I recently bought an Australian import Y60 automatic LWB which has a turbo on it. This is a very rare sight in the UK. Only ever seen one other turbo'd one. The car has a broken transmission and rusty bodywork . Also it has 320,000 kms and runs very badly, so I was thinking of using the turbo parts on another engine. (or maybe repairing this engine and using the whole engine.)

I am not 100% sure if this is a factory turbo or an add-on, perhaps someone can shed some light on it from this picture. It has a sump oil return, and a stainless exhaust system all the way from the back of the turbo housing. Turbo is not water cooled. Has an aluminium tube where you would expect the intercooler to be infront of the rad. Pipework looks too untidy to be factory turbo.

I would like to fit a boost compensator, as I do not want to be belching out black smoke and sooting up my engine. Also we get smoke tested at our 'MOT' test once a year, so just cranking up the pump to get enough fuel when on boost is not really an option. Its a Zexel rotary pump.

Does anyone have a boost compensator they can sell me? Or a photo of one on its own with any associated parts needed to fit it? Where is pressure signal taken from (presume directly from intake manifold is ok?)

I have been told the top of a TD27t pump could be used etc.

Is it straight forward to fit? any calibration required etc? or is any adjustment needed available from outside once installed?

I presume there is enough capacity in these pumps and I don't need to be upgrading the internals. ( i dont plan to run more than about 12 psi boost)

Having read a few other posts on here, a Pyro gauge seems like a wise investment so I'm going to find myself one of those.

looks like a safari. high roof dead giveaway. indicates it's a jap import
turbo is an old air research t04 - non standard (aftermarket fitted)

I'm pretty sure we (australia) never released any automatic deisels.. is this 12 or 24 volt?

couldn't you turn the fuel up for general driving, then turn it back down again for your MOT test? :D

Hi, its a 12 volt single battery vehicle. It has air conditioning, no rear heater, and a big trans oil cooler under the front bumper. Transfer instructions on sunvisor are in English. Strange thing is speedo is in MPH, i would expect Aus vehicle (or Japanese market )to be in KM/H.

I don't really want to try and cheat the system for a: environmental reasons b: in case of a roadside check (they do those) and c: excess fuel consumption on low revs- high accellerator situations.

I also don't want my vehicle to be seen smoking incase I get stopped and checked for other fuels in the tank (veggie oil etc!)

The anaeroid will have to be fitted to the pump and calibrated out of the vehicle~ sorry.
A diesel injection shop should be able to fit it, calibrate the pump/ anaeroid in less than a day. I removed and refitted mine to save some $$, but even if they had done the whole job it should have still only taken 1 day.
The anaeroid is controlled by the pressure in the intake manifold as you said.
$au~ anaeroid was $500ish and the calibration was $200.
Hope this helps.

thanks.

Is it possible to take the pump off without taking the intake manifold off? Looks like all those injector pipes would stop the pump coming back far enough to get it out, without bending all the pipes .

The pump comes off without taking off the manifold. Just loosing the injection pipes and swing them out of the way.

Thanks, is it worth stopping the engine in a particular spot or trying to mark the gears or is it easy enough to time up when i;m putting it all back together?

Just sent you an e-mail with a pdf of the directions Peter (Old Mav) gave me last January. Cheers, John

got it, thanks! Looks like they have taken the intake off though.

And where can I buy an Aneroid (sounds like something you would go to the doctors for!)

Nope, just checked my other manual and there is no need to take off the intake manifold. I will scan it and send it to you.

The first thing to do is find a diesel mechanic and a pump shop~ without them you are wasting your time. (if they don't know what an aneroid is LEAVE QUICKLY!!)
If they can't help at least find out if they can fit and calibrate if you supply so you could import one?

there is a good diesel place about 50km south of here. lots of people recommend it. I spoke to them on the phone and they seemed to think they could fit it. (i could probably fit it but not calibrate it)

still looking for source for aneroid. Spoke to one diesel place, and they said even if I had one, they couldn't set it up as they would have no idea what spec to set it to. Is there any information I can give them to help them? I guess they're looking for a certain fuel delivery at certain pressure and certain revs, at full accellerator ? non-boost fuel delivery would be same as non-turbo engine one would presume, (or would it be slightly less due to restriction to air passage the turbo would cause?) but I would need to know how much extra fuel the aneroid would need to give, and also whether the pump has this capacity on the standard plunger etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

I know this is an overseas call but give these guys a call and ask for Craig Yeatman. He can halp you and is only to happy to provide information. Just check the country code. The first 7 is for Queensland~ you just add the code before it.

thanks, i'll try em.

ITS A FORD NOT A NISSAN

the aneroid doesnt increase fuel it only reduces it at low or no boost
when you are at full boost it is like the aneroid isnt there and full fuel [or whatever the pump is set to] flows through

Australia did get automatic TD42 in the GQ LWB. Aus also did get the highroof versions - in the '88 to '93 Ti models I believe?

That vehicle has probably been the UK most of its life if the MPH speedo and bodyrust is anything to go by lol.

I am able to help you out with both an aneroid and or doing the whole pump job. Give me a call or email if you wish.
