View Full Version : Poor TD42 Economy

This is one for the TD42 gurus. Im averaging a little over 400km to a tank.
I use to get 600km to a tank but havent for quite some time.
I know my tappets are loose and due for adjustment and also notice more diesel smoke under normal acceleration then before. What is the probable cause, injectors, injection pump???
If all else fails time to see a diesel specialist

ok,
1) yes tappets do affect the peformance/tuning of the engine,
2) change yr air cleaner for a GENUINE AIR CLEANER, about $23 from nissan,
3) change the fuel filter for a GENUINE filter about $42.
4) change filters NISSAN AGAIN $12-18 & use CASTROL RX SUPER
then see how the engine performs, if not that much better then Look at the lift on the camshaft as these do wear out, if yr keen while yr doing the tappets U could use a dial indicator & check the valve MAXIMUM lift on each valve to see how much wear in on the camshaft/valve gear.
I MACHINED camshafts for 11years & these engine camshafts were always worn out when I got them to repair, my engine has travelled 380K & I have just freshened up the engine, I found no excessive wear but i do change the oil every 5000kms without fail. If yr camshaft & lifters are worn out, I do have a BRAND NEW GENUINE CAMSHAFT & LIFTERS for yr engine

Thanks for the info mate, all the filters were replaced last weekend!!!
Will do the tappet adjustment this afternoon, i have heard stories of worn cams on the td42. will see how we go!

You be sure to get genuine filters Revn...
Sounds like a call to United Fuel Injection in Redcliffe might be the go.
Or a fuel system cleaner ? I think these work better as a preventative rather than a cure though. Some of them recommend double doses but I dont know which. I generally use Nulon because I can get it easily and fairly cheaply.

Yeah...I remember that from a while back, you helped me with a part number that my local Nissan dealer had tried to bull**** me over. I should have stuck on one of those tongue firmly in cheek emoticon thingo's.
Ive got a 70 ltr tank and atm im getting no more than 350km to a tank. I used to get 500. (N/A)The turbo seemed to lower it to 420+ and now its worse. Im wondering if driving it flat foot under 1800rpm does it? (Holding it flat to 1800 then shift) I do this most of the time due to the noise factor i have. (other than a highway).
Maybe its my style of driving?

hehe i will beat him to it
you will find there is a point when puting your foot down where it wont go any faster , putting your foot down further past this point is just wasting fuel
so yeah holding your foot flat to the boards is not good for fuel economy

Yeah , i'd have to agree with ITS AFORD on this one , haha
Might do a experiment. Fill it up and go for a drive the way i currently drive, 20k or so, than go on the same route again doing as "its a ford" says. Just to see....

when you fitted the turbo you would have had the fuel preasure turned up abit aswell , hp aint free when you are useing it
in my car if i drive around like a hoon i will get around 400 ks from a tank but if i change my driving style a bit and gradually feed the loud pedal i will get around 600 ks to a tank
the tank is 95 liters but only get 70 to 75 liters in when the guage reads empty

Last weekend I did 651 kms from a full tank, which brought me down to just over 1/4. When I filled it up it only took just under 61L - WTF? Perhaps the meter on the diesel pump at the servove station was shot? Still, with my naturally asthmatic engine, I am always around 10/100. No turbo so there really is not sense in even trying to push it. Also, I don't have a pyro so I always just back off the throttle and drop a gear if I see any smoke when climbing our big hills. Guess there is some benefit to going like a turtle  but man would I like a turbo.:driving:

from what ive heard this sounds like your injectors and injector pump needing a service. injectors may not be atomising properly, which would explain the extra smoke.

haha this sounds like me, im not getting quite that good, but on 35s i get 11.5 L/100 and most people find it hard to believe. just keep driving like a grandma, we are bigger so we dont need to be faster than everyone on the road. although getting beaten by school buses is a little embarassing :(
An update of my test.... After blowing the air filter out, and not pushing the go pedal faster than it needs, ive got half a tank left and done 235km. I know if i really pussyfoot it, i will get 500+ out of the tank. I suspected these results, just never had the patience to see. I believe the airfilter played a good part.

Just a note, AIR CLEANERS play a big part when it comes to power and fuel usage. When turboed, the air cleaners rule is bigger is best and clean is paramount.

Old Mav, I guess that explains some of my number. For highway and town I use a K&N and for off road (outside of winter) I have a Nissan paper that I keep in the truck to put on for dusty conditions.
I also keep my tire pressure up fairly high for around town and highway (40lbs), when there is no snow. I presume that also helps with the fuel economy as there is less rolling resistance. Yes, I know it is not the best for a comfortable ride. When there is snow, I air down to around 25-30lbs. In the winter, I expect my fuel economy suffers because we then have to run winter diesel, which has less energy. I will wait for some snowy cold weather and calculate my economy in these conditions on a road trip. Shouldn't be long now. Some of the mountain passes had their first dusting of snow this weekend. :(

I`ve found a combination of all of the above (40psi tyre`s clean filters, driving as, "its a ford" say`s , around 2000rpm for gear changes, and using cruise control) see`s my truck retain the 12L mark even with pulling a camper and a bit of 4wding, that it had before I put the turbo on with out the extra work. ;)

I discovered yesterday that my GQ Gets about 700km a tank around town (90 or 95 litre tank) And only judging by the 350 km for half tank I got during the week..
Ill wait until I refill it for exact results. And I just had it serviced too so That should increase economy a bit. Shame it is so slow though

for the WA people i drove from geraldton to perth (500ish km) on just under 3/4 of a tank and then drove like a hoon around perth and still got 730km out of 76L!!!! but i must admit thats the best fuel economy ive ever had as now it has the roof rack on it, the snorkle and the 33s... i not get about 570 - 600km around town driving it like a granny
