View Full Version : Gearbox chatter with clutch out
Hi Folks,
Only one (TD42 manual powered) vehicle I've seen so far did not suffer some gearbox chatter with the clutch out at idle - an '88 Safari "rust-o-bucket" with what looked like a genuine 88,000om on the clock. Very clean, just rusty!
So is a bit of gearbox chatter normal? Damned if I can hear any rumbles while driving so just wondering if a bit of light chatter is a major problem or not.
Cheers

hehe, mine started out like that.
Was a toss up between the thrust bearing or the input shaft bearings but it got worse and eventually the whole gearbox sounded like a meat mincer in every gear starting with 5th.
The noise dwindled away after a few hundred more kays and is reasonably quiet now as I assume the metal parts concerned are ground up into microscopic particles now lol.
The clutch is still fine.
I purchased another gearbox though, ex 2001 GU TD42t.
Haven't put it in yet as I found out these still had the short shaft 5th. gear issue.

mine rattles on idle, been like it for 10000k's. i think it a bearing thats sloppy in the box. i just raised my idle to 900 which 90% fixed it,that was altered 90000k ago and hasn't got any worse. i think it a problem thats easier put up with than fixed, really common,i heard it a few times in other safaris in car parks

Mine chatters at cold idle and has a slight rattle at low rpm on take off, have heard a few others that do the same. Has been like it for a while now and seems ok. Will be changing the oil soon, thats been a while.

Yep, mine sounds like a knight in armour falling down a set of stone steps at idle. Hasn't got any worse over the last 3.5 years so I'll ignore it until it breaks (which will probably be in the middle of the Simpson Desert in 3 weeks time... )

i changed the oil in mine but used 80 instead of the 75 and added 25% moreys,. its totally shut it up but now its slow changing gears. absolultly gutted its a bugger of a job. i'll do it again i think rather have the knight in armour.

Yer its a pain when you can shift back to second without snapping the stick off

I had a Maverick trayback that was still making this noise after 270,000 kms. It was still rattling when I sold it and it's still rattling to this day.
It seems to be "just one of those things".
I used to simply stamp on the clutch pedal very hard, a couple of time and it went away. Like - really thump it with yer boot.

Mine does the same but only when cold. It is worse in winter - but then the whole beast jumps around and clanks until it gets warm. I presumed it was the clutch. However, I will be putting in synthetic oil in the Tranny and TC in a couple weeks. I'll see if that makes any difference. Shifting is too hard in the early mornings when I am where it is real cold (-15 to -30).

You will find it a normal part of life for a nissan box if you put a aftermarket clutch in a 4.2 of a solid flywheel on a 3.0
Good old road ranger gearboxes!

The answer is actually quiet simple and you have to see the irony... This happened to me a while back while travelling around OZ, it started rattling in Albury when the temps dropped to minus whatbloodyever overnight but would disapear when she warmed up. So thinking the worst I had the box pulled and stripped down, it turned out to be the anti-rattle gear!!!.....yes this is not a typo. This gear sits on the countershaft against the largest gear, its the same diameter as the gear but only 2-3mm thick, its a bit hard to explain how it works but i'll give it a go.This gear has 1 more tooth on it than the gear its against, the idea being that by having the extra tooth it holds the gearset in tension at idle, the result being...no rattles. Guess what it does when it wears out????.... Sorry about the explanation, its easier to understand when its apart in front of you. If you look in the manual I think they call it a "sub gear". Most importantly its not terminal just irritating.

i was told this to (what ranger said) years ago, i was told that it could be fix but it could return within 6 months, the patrol now has 346000 ks and the box is as good as new....when driving past cruisers i like to think the patrol is just have'n a growl :)
