Coming back from a weekend away when i passed a GQ on the side of the road. as i went passed i noticed a sticker on the side which said "Supercharged Diesel". I didn't realise that diesel engine could be supercharged......or maybe i'm just a putz.

What kits are available for supercharging the TD42?
Is it comparable to turbo charging or do you get a "different" kind of power?

cheers

you will loose your engine braking with a supercharger on a diesel, unless it is clutched and switches off when there's no throttle.

I seem to recall seeing a magazine article comparison on the net somewhere of supercharged and a turbo diesel kits..

Sprintex do one for the TD42, so do Capa.

4WD Monthly did a comparo of Sprintex S/C versus a Safari T/C on a LWB Patrol a while back. The Safari T/C romped all over the Sprintex on all aspects if I recall correctly.

There is a thread on the Outers sites about supercharging a TD42 using a Toyota Crown S/C. Gave a modest 8psi of boost or something, worked well for towing a camper or boat etc.

A mate in Otago had a S/C from a Toyota Levin (off the 4agze motor) on his GQ, went quite well by the sound of it.
I'm trying to get more info on the as I'm looking into doing this myself.

Supercharging was a popular choice some time ago due to reliability issues associated with turbos. They've come a long way since the the old Nissan Exa Turbo models.

Super charging doesn't suffer from lag as some turbos do, or generate the extreme temperatures. It does however rob the engine of power to achieve this by boosting via a PTO.

The best thing about turbos is that it's free horsepower that's normally wasted, and that's gotta be good for motorsport. With variable nozzles and opposing twin screws, turbos seem to have become the bolt on horsepower of choice these days.

A few people on OuterLimits have gone for the toyota SC on a TD42. You go and search for it because I really can't be bothered.

I would not personally bother with a SC.........give me a turbo, 3" system and 11-13PSI anyday of the week over a SC.

You may however find this an interesting read

As I said the supercharged option has been done many times now. Google is your friend.;-)

theres no reason why you couldn't get 11-13psi boost with a super charger too ... and have extractors and 3" exhaust
