I don't have a roof rack... I've seen a few mounted on the rear door, piggy-backing the spare tire. However, I've heard that this is no good especially with the added weight of 33" tires since door hinges would give way.

Mounting up front is another option but my winch will already be taxing the front suspension.

Any other ideas?

Links with pics would certainly help.

By the way, my Hi-Lift is the 48" version.

John,

Had the same problem with my hilift, when I owned the Wrangler and now the GQ,

I found the safest way was only take it with you when u are actually 4WDing, and not commuting around town, beacuse:

1. thet get pinched
2. add extra unnecessary weight in the 4wd
3. get dirty with riad grime and need more servicing
4. are a real PITA if the missus gets a flat and has to remove the hilift from the spare before getting the 33 or even 35 off the rear door.. you will soon be told a good place to store it then I can guarantee... :o

If you have an internal cargo barrier and you really want to carry it all the time, secure it between the rear seats and onto the cargo barrier... down low....... for a good center of gravity set up & out of sight of thieves, will keep nice and clean, and will make you think twice about that ok rut when you have to get it out of the back....

In reality hi lifts, winches etc are there to recover you if you happen to misjudge a track or obsticle or inadvertently hi centre yourself in a bog hole

Of course all good 4WDers engage brain and walk the track and check out the bog holes before engaging low range

Anyway John, it's all a matter of where it fits for you to do the job you need

Great ideas, guys... Keep 'em coming... :)

No, I don't have an internal cargo barrier and I have my cd changer under my 2nd row split center seat...

I'd really prefer to mount the thing outside since I carry a bunch of cargo when off-roading and it would be a pain to get a Hi-Lift deep inside and damage whatever it hits.

Also, It always muddy out here in the Philippines and a muddy Hi-Lift makes more sense outside. :)

yeh it took up too much room so i fitted mine to the spare wheel... did 120,000 kms with it on the 35"spare which was also spaced out an extra 40 mm and the door never dropped .
did several outback trips of 7 to 10 thousand ks over badly corrugated roads as well.
used the highlift to haul myself up onto the spare wheel so i could unpack the roofrack all the time.
I did regularly oil the hinges and the hilift was tight against the tyre so it didn't move around... maybe that helped.

Hi - what do you use to fit the HiJack onto the spare wheel holder on the back door? Is it something I can buy at a hardware store?

I got my mount from TJM. Also has a lug for the padlock! It holds the jack very securely and also locates the handle vertically and clamps it as well.
