I have a question as to what type of electric winch I should be looking at getting. My rig is heavy, its a diesel with steel rack, steel front and rear bars, cargo drawers, dual battery, fridge, etc. Would a Warn High Mount 8274-50 cope with this sort of weight or should I be getting something bigger? I have seen the 8274-50 in action and like the line speed it has. Does Warn have any high mount winches bigger than this?

I've got the warn high mount on mine, GQ LWD 4.2 diesel, steel bar, long range tank, duel batteries etc.... and i've got no complaints about it, the line speed compared to my dads low mount warn 10000 pound is great, however, if your not in a hurry and don't plan on competing then i would have a good look at the more powerful low mount, i think there a bit cheaper too.

cheers for the info. I'll probably go with a highmount and if i have problems put a bigger motor in. Thanks.
Hey Big Mav. Personally I would go for a low mount unless you are competing. A hight mount is still only an 8000 pound at the the end of the day and if your wagon which is already pretty heavy let alone it being fully loaded up might struggle abit if you were really stuck hard. A 9000 pound will pull your truck alot harder.
I have a diesel SWB GQ and am not going to be competing for about another 2 years so I'm getting a new Warn Low mount XD9000 because i beleve that I don't need the speed for now and still get good air flow through to my radiator where the high mounts tend to block a bit of flow.

Thanks Kane point taken. The only reason why I am steering towards the high mount is because i may be able to get one on the cheap. But am still weighingup all options. Would it be difficult to modify a highmount bar to suit a lowmount winch? Wouldn't putting a motor out of a 9000lb winch effectively make it a 9000 or is there more to it then that?

hey big mav,
my bro has one of those low mount 12,000lb chinese winches from ebay for about $400, some ppl say stay away from them but everything is made in china these days, he has given that winch an absolute hiding in the last 2 yrs and has never looked back. never had a issue. just something to keep in mind, if your concerned get a turfa just incase it fails, both items are still cheaper then most winches and the only run 2 soleniods!
also 10000lbs is the rating of the cable/rope not the motor, and winching on steeper slopes or in deep mud can double or triple the load on your winch, get something a little bigger than required and do yourself a favour and get a snatch block, tree trunk protector and i'd even recommend a winch extention. :D

tigerz winch has 3yr warranty and is cheap. a mate got one but haven't used it yet so can't say about speed etc.i would never get a warn, cause of the price only and really how much do you use your winch? i have a tirfor in the back and have only had to use it once properly, but i would still be there if didn't have it. so whatever you get you'll be better off.

High mount bars are harder to find used and unbent.
I'd go a XD9000, had a 10k on the GQ, but its 30kgs heavier than the 9000, but I got it CHEAP.. Went with a XD9000 on the GU..
Highmount is a waste for weekend driving, whats the rush anyway?

If you can get a cheap high mount go for it. A mate that goes 4wding with me got a 12000Ib cheap china winch and the first time we went out and used his was the last. in the time it took to winch 1 4wd up this huge steep hill we winch 3 up with my high mount. even though they are only rated at 8000Ib they still pull hard and they hold more cable which is handy for double line pulls which gives you 16000Ib.
On the bar side if you are handy with a grinder and a welder you can easily fit a high mount warn in an ARB deluxe bar, thats whats on mine.
A highmount will require alot of bar modification in most occasions.
If you are after line speed a 9.5XP has the fastest under load if your budget and space allows.
Purchase one from the States (AUD 98c as of writing).
Otherwise a XD9000 off Ebay second hand is not a bad option.
