Turns out the alternator in my 88 GQ (4.2l Petrol) is dead. Had it checked out and it needs a full rebuild.
Is there a good quality aftermarket product worth buying? How much could I expect to spend?
Is the original unit worth rebuilding? Will it be more reliable than an aftermarket unit?
Also, I suspect that the one in the vehicle may not be genuine. It doesnt have "Nissan" printed on it anywhere. Has anyone got a photo? Could it be out of an old VL Commodore?
Who can help me in Brisbane?
Lots of Q's I know. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers, Tim

Let me start by saying I am nowhere near an expert but I also have an 88 42TB and my alternator was dead and I only just tried to rebuild it last weekend. I was told from the local auto electrician that if it only needed new brushes and bearings that it would cost about $30 if I did it myself. Getting it apart was fairly easy but the big prob was getting the bearing off the shaft for that I needed to use a hydraulic press. I then discovered that my diode pack had physically exploded and that took out my rectifier and to top it all off my rotor had a few shorts, needless to say it was cheaper to buy a new one. I wanted to get a bit higher amps so I opted for a 70 amp unit that cost me $350.00.
My new one has a Baxter sticker on it but it is supposed to be made by hitachi and the code is: A-4003.
Hope this helps.

Thats not a bad price, but for only 70 amps???? I run a 140 amp that only needed minor mods to fit dont know what the thing would of cost if i bought it new though, as i rebuilt it when i worked at auto elec mob. Cost me $70 for bearing. I havent been in the game for over 3 years so my prices were worst case sorry. Heres some shots if anyones interested in the mod. With 4 100w roof lights,2 100w spotties and 2 110w highbeams all on its still charges close to 14 volts at idle. It's been in for over 3 years and hasn't missed a beat even with all the punishment it gets:skull: . Just had to grind back the leg a bit shown in the shot and made up some spacer as the bottom legs were spaced slightly different and the holes were over sized. The plug was spliced so i can still run the original if i had to. The rest is a bit vague as it was a while ago but in general a easy change. The pulley is small as there is very little room for adjustment and just happened to be lying around at the time. Hope this helps someone. Cheers Mick
