turned out to be the muffler... seems to be a common problem with the OE style mufflers... the spot welds crack inside the muffler allowing the pipes inside to move and block the chambers restricting flow big time....fixed the problem with a truck style muffler.. feels like a new wagon. :D

Ive got a mate with a 92 model 3ltr he uses as a tow vehicle with the same problem but it only happened when he was towing. Could it br the muffler/ fuel pump?

yes it could, because when towing the car is under greater load, the need for correct combustion prosess right through to the exhaust system is increased. and so under normal conditions it may not be notisable, but there are other causes also. gumed up carbie or injectors, blocked fuel filter, or just crap fuel to start with. condition of ignition system leads, plugs cap etc, even the coil has a greater load put on it so if any of thats bit dicky it could be the problem.
good luck

How many kms has the thing done? Depending on that I would start with a replacement fuel filter if that has not been done for some time and then start looking at other options like exhaust, ignition system, etc. if the fuel filter does not cure the drama.
Cheers
