Has any here got an RX model patrol?

I am looking at getting a tow rig and I remember the RX was selling in pretty heafty numbers before the GU arrived on the scene.

What I am interested in getting is a RX with the 2.8 Turbo engine.

All i will be using it for is driving to and from work and towing a trailer with a hilux on board.

What peoples opinons and what are the interior specs like on the RX?

For towing duties you may be better off with a 4.2 Diesel. The 2.8t will do it ok but you'll be changing down those gears pretty quickly as soon as you hit a hill. The 4.2 will hold gears much longer. I recently towed a diesel rocky on a trailer which would be fairly similar to a lux i would imagine and never had to drop back a gear once, in fact barely noticed i was towing anything at all. The turbo on mine makes a bit of a difference though. You'll probably get 2.8 owners telling you they tow with their rigs with no problems. Why not test drive both and make a decision from that.

my dad has a 2.8 turbo intercooled GU, i have towed hiluxes with that and never had a problem,

i know it has the intercooler, but the GQ with aftermarket intercooler (safari) has higher torque & kw figure than his GU

the only reason i am thinking of the 2.8 is to get something newer, like i said 95% will be daily driving

Bubs. Vortex is selling his (QLD) in the 4Sale section (here & Overlander Forums).

I've only had my 2.8L for a few months, and have only towed with it once (200km round trip, on Freeway & city). Two things: Firsty, I had a pretty light load on (Cage trailer & load, maybe 300kg???), and secondly, my Thermostat was playing up, causing the car to overheat (Not caused by towing, but fixed, the week after.)

To be honest, it took some time to reach cruising speed of 110 km/hr, but once at that speed, it maintained it with ease. Hills actually didn't slow it down too much.

What I was impressed with was the Fuel consumption hardly changed, with or without a trailer. Again, this was a pretty light load, and it might struggle with a heavier trailer.

As for interior specs - I am now used to it, but found the inside very out dated. My old '92 4Runner looked a lot more 'modern' than the '97 Patrol.

From what I can see, Votrex's looks pretty good - low k's too.

I have a 94 RX. Interior is okay, on first glance the only difference I have ever noticed between it and a ST are:

1.No additional centre console bit around handbrake and gearstick. It still has the centre storage area and cup holders
2. manual windows - so on door trim you dont have the bigger arm rest

I am sure there is more but its still pretty comfortable and into a "hose out" version
cheers
