View Full Version : whisling noise out of TD 42 with after marker turbo
i recently has an whishling noise out of my engine bay seems the sound is out off the front of the engine bay. it's a loud whishling noise, high pitch, like a granding metal noise. it only happens on certian rev and when you hold the engine at that certain rev.
my car is a 97 GQ TD42, with after market Swtichzer turbo.
does anyone knows what's the reason of that noise and what cause that problem, coz i went ARB northside, they can't find out any problem.
thanks very much for your time and advise.

Do you have Air con? Check the idler bearing on the A/C belt, they tend to be exposed to mud etc and wear out fairly quickly. When they DO wear out, one of the symptoms is a loud high pitched whistling noise, altho it can usually be stopped by turning the A/C off, but not always, as the fan belt keeps spinning anyway, but under less load.
Apart from that, whistling can come from leaks in the exhaust system and/or manifold, from any of the turbo hoses/pipes, or even from any of the seals on the turbo. Usually they are found by tracking down the black marks, often oily, that accompany the air being forced out at pressure!
Cheers!
thanks very much. i normally not use air con when i drive, but i will try to take the belt off see if the noise still there.
what you think abou the turbo? is my turbo has any problems? i've checked the play on the turbine, there's no play. but some people recon it may be the turbo. but the noise more likely out of the front of the engine bay.
thanks very much again. ;)
I'm leaning towards the belts/pulley bearings.
The bearing inside the power steering pump pulley seems to be on its way out in my rig (also a TD42 but non turbo).
Mine too makes a whistling noise but not that noisy yet

Thanks very much for your reply. is your car's noise only happens at few certin revs, and it's come and go that kind of granding whistling noise. is yours in same situation?
Well, similar. It is a high pitch whistling with a slight squeeking.
I can here it on idle and it's loudest when the engine is cold.
I hope that helps mate! It's really annoying to be looking for noises:confused:
ITS A FORD NOT A NISSAN

mine whistles but i thought that was normal for a turbo?
it's not a turbo whistling noise, it's a high pitch, metal rotation granding noise. i can hear from inside the car, it mainly happens around 2000 revs.
anyone may have suggestion or expreience what it meight be?
thanks very much!

Cheers!I had exactly the same symptoms as TD6 and it was the a/c idler bearings. There are two bearings on the spindle.
The only problem with mine was that it was so gunked up with mud and crap that at certain revs and load, the belt tension would slacken and resistance in the bearings caused the back of the belt to rub on the non spinning pulley and make the noise, exactly what TD6 is describing.
I took the pulley off, cleaned it all up and noise has been gone since.
Easy fix that one was.
Dont spray solvent onto the bearings though TD6.
Get under there, push the a/c belt away from the idler pully and if you cant turn it freely that might be what it is.
thanks very much for all of your guys time and help.
sudso, how do you take the air con pully off? you mentioned it's not a hard job, could you please describ a bit more. what do you clean it with?
do i try to turn the pully while the belt is on or take the belt off and then turn it.
thanks for your time.

thanks for your time. Its bolted with one bolt to the engine block near the bottom passenger side front of the motor.
You dont need to remove the a/c belt, it will come away easy.
To check it just get underneath, look for the small cylindrical looking idler pulley, push the a/c belt away from it, and turn it with your other hand.
If its hard to turn or wont turn at all the cylindrical bearing body might be full of crap or the bearings might be "dried out".
Unbolt it and take the whole thing out, if the bearings feel notchy to spin, take them out and get new ones from a bearing place but take an old one with you so they can match it. They're only a few bucks each.
If its just gunked up with crap but the bearings rotate smoothly and fairly easily just clean out the gunk with an old toothbrush or scraper but dont spray any solvents onto the bearings themselves.
The noise will be either from the belt rubbing on a non spinning pulley or the bearings are starting to sieze up, or a combo of both, if thats what the noise is from.
Also, if the body of the pulley is worn where the belt was contacting it, just put it back on the other way round when you bolt it back on so the belt has a fresh surface to roll on.
cheers
thanks very much sudso, thanks for all your time and support.
have a good one. i will give it a try as what you've mentioned.
