G'day all,

First time posting here.. 8) so howdy!

I'm shopping for a tidy GQ, and after owning a couple of NA diesels, amd not convinced I want another?

I've found a really tidy 94 4.2 petrol manual with 170k on the clock and was after some info on expected economy, whether it'll have enough grunt down low off road etc.

I really don't do much towing, weekly running about k's aren't that high really either, so day to day economy isn't the biggest worry.

Cheers
Boopa

If your looking for good economy, dont buy a Tb42

They drink the fuel - awesome motor tho, plenty of low down grunt

Hi

I have a standard TB42 and get around 5.5km/l almost everywhere. This includes sand, rock and 2800m high mountain passes. On road I can sometimes get up to 6km/l but this is at higher altitudes, at the coast it is 5.5km/l. I have heard of guys getting as low as 3km/l but fortunately have never had this with my Patrol. Low down there is plenty of grunt.

Hope this helps.

Havent really done the figures as it's slightly rich so not a fair compariosn. However a half tank is about 300-350 k's if you dont push it for general driving on 31"s around brissy (has extractors sports exhaust and snorkel on XLT SWB).

Not that much worse than my vitara on 31"s really... maybe 20% worse - the vitara running right with a carby rebuild would have been better still.

But the vitara was still way quicker, even with 31"s.

I am running a TB42E in Dubai and in summer where the tempreture hits 54 degrees and with AC working front and back and I am using 34 inch tyres, I get 4.8 KM and in winter I get 5.4 KM

thanks for the replys guys......

looks as though I've bought this thing as it's in awsome condition both mechanically and body/interior wise :D ...with heaps of extras also!

as for the economy.....well it'll be my wifes run around rig during the week, and at an average of 200k's a week, it's not going to break us....long trips might be another story, so I'll have to invert in a long range tank. Although price wise it was 5 to 6k less than a comparitive diesel, which works out to a ****e load of fuel, and i'll have a ****e load more power also.

after seriously looking at the running costs etc of my previous diesels, I reckon you're better off financally with a petrol engine.

a little off topic here, but if i change diff ratios to suit my tyre size (33s), would my economy improve.

eg

mine has 3.9s with 31s standard, now i am running 33s with 3.9s, say if i goto 4.3s (i think thats what i need) would my economy improve, as in more km out of a tank?

Hottiemonster

It would be nice for you to start a new thread with your question re diff ratios etc

I have a 94 4.2efi and used to only get about 450ks to tank so I fitted a 147l replacement and stretched it out to 600-650ks
But after fitting a 70l aux tank I know get 1000ks to tank
Hows that for ecomomy. Can now go the same distance as my mate with a 4.2TDI
