The fuel guage on my patrol is broken. When i fill up the tank it goes up to about 3/4's, then after i do about 50 kays it sits just above empty, then after i have done around another 300-350 kays, it goes from just above empty to below empty, then i run out of fuel :P

How can i diagnose where the problem is? is it likely to be a sender problem? or could it actually be a problem with the dash guage?

Last year, after about 2000k's of corrugated road, mine did a similar thing, and then eventually stopped working totally some time later.

The float had come unclipped. I suspect that initially it had the end clip come undone & it had pivotted up, thus giving low fuel readings, before eventually coming completely off. (It will make sense when you see it.)

2 cable ties later, all fixed!

Hope this helps.

Mine now sits well below empty after putting $30 of fuel in it yesterday. I gather its the fuel sender then? and not in the guage.

Just an update it was my fuel sender unit. After bouncing around on a rock ledge last weekend it seems to have "popped" the float assembly out of the rest of the sender assembly. It was just a matter of pushing ti back into place and testing it B4 re-fitting and job done .

Many thanks

Does that mean I was right - had to happen eventually - being right I mean!
