Looking into the future possibility of a GQ/MAV as my tow rig for the MQ.
What i want to know, is wat models are there?
I.e. RX etc.

and what extra options are in each? like a/c, leather seats or wat ever?

also, which model is the base model? and wat sort of price range is a GOOD price to be looking at for a LWB or SWB late 80's in this model?

cheers,

bace model is DX it has vinal floor etc. my DX has AC dunno if its standard,
next is ST which is your tyipical cloth trim and TI is velour and electrics etc. i think thats right. you should pic up a reasonable condition standard DX one for bout 10-12k maby 9k depending if you go to auctions and if any one thinks they can get cheaper then buy it come to vic and sell it youll make cash! or show me so i can buy it! having said that the bastards are coming down so nothing suprises me. i paid 14k for mine with 3" lift and 32"muds f&R bars 12 months ago and me mate paid 15 for a standard ST with a front bar 18 moths ago. both diesels at 220 000ks roughly

cause a few of my mates have bought GQ's with carpet and elec windows in SWB for around the 5 K mark and are in decent condition. 88/89 model

Some DX came with drum brakes rear also, so watch out for that as it is a complete diff change to get disks. All GQ's came into the country without air con, it is added B4 sale and Nissan OZ fitted it to all TI and most ST not all.

I bought my 88 GQ SWB for 6K over a year ago.. It had a factory rear diff lock (which also means disc brakes), overhead console, TB42, auto, etc.. Only a couple of quick & cheap fixes for roadworthy.. eBay is your friend

I paid 9K for my 88' rear disc ST GQ SWB Diesel with 219000 k's on the clock. It was blody hard finding a SWB diesel so when i found mine, I swooped on it!

paid much less for my MAV Shorty but condition was probably a little worse than some of these.

XLT spec - factory difflock and 4.1 diffs :D

I've regularly sen GQ shortys go for 5-6 in sydney when I weas looking for mine there was one with a winch and all for $5500 but it was auto and autos are ghey.

You wan a LWB for towing ratingand you can score one with some minor panel damage for $4-5k in sydney easy.

well thats all interesting, i think youd be really i mean really hard pushed finding a GQ swb for 5 or 6k in victoria. and harder to find a diesel too. my 1990 DX has rear discs and A/C.

$5000 for my SWB ST with A/C and dual fuel about 6 months ago. :D
tow rating for LWB is only 50kg more than SWB, my SWB tows my buggy fine. bit slow on the hills, but otherwise OK.

It all comes down to what ya gonna build with the thing.......

I was happy to fork out 8700 for a bright yellow 88 DX td42 SWB GQ w/drums :x !!! Because I knew at the time they (diesel shorties) were as rare as rocking horse Sh#t....

I realised from day one I would be pouring money into it to get it to where I wanted it.... So I didn't care how cheap and nasty it was....

ARRRGGH the annoying thing is that a mate of my brothers had a TD42 SWB mav w/ bells n whistles and just sold it for $7500 and he is an ex used car salesman... I mean I would have been pushing for like 10000.. The thing was fairly clean too....

Private prices can be pretty random...

What does your buggy wieght?

I ask this because in NSW the vehicle that is towing must wiegh more than the load being towed.
I would love an SWB, and am aware that they will tow almost the same, but it doesnt wiegh enough to tow my SWB MQ and a trailer........

yeah, i thought that was the ruling as well, but it has recently changed to fall in line with the other states. i think the trailer and load can weigh 1.5x the weight of the tow vehicle or something now.
i might make a couple phone calls and find out for sure..

my buggy weighs 1280kg
my trailer is about 550kg.

OK, the rules for NSW/ACT have been revised so that the manufacturer's maximum towing capacity stands as legal. on old vehicles where no capacity has been stated the vehicle weight x 1.5 is used as a maximum.

GQ SWB = 2500kg
GQ wagon and ute = 2505kg

fawk knows why they bother with 5kg difference, but that's what it says in the book..

So therefore, the MQ wieghing around 1600kgs and the trailer around 600, i can tow it all with an SWB?

Though then again, ive heard some bad things about towing with an SWB? is it that bad with fish tailing and all that?

just curious, if i can get away with an SWB they are cheaper, i may go that option...........

With regards to the rule, that is correct Wendle, i rang the RTA as well today and they told me, as long as the manufacturer limit is high enough to tow the load its legal :D

mine hasn't done anything bad once. and i have towed with it on some ****house roads.

well that mkes me re think it even more, as ive been told that they lift up in the rear heaps on braking, they fishtail cause of the length, and they body roll stacks more around corners.......
If it aint that bad i may just get a SWB desiel rather than a LWB.....
depends on prices i spose.

Does urs go through loads of gas while towing, being on LPG wendle?

Does urs go through loads of gas while towing, being on LPG

it uses about the same towing on the highway as it does around town unladen, maybe a bit more.

Is urs straight gas or duel fuel mate?

also, in saying what u r saying......

I want to tow the MQ on a trailer maybe half a dozen times a year if that......... and i want a confy daily roader at the same time.

Originally i thought that a LWB diesel was the only option hear...
I want a SWB deisel rather than a LWB,

But if i can get away with a SWB petrol on gas, and it will do the job, u reckon i would be better off with on of them?????
keeping in mind that i know it wont tow as well and it will be a little dearer to run while towing but around town will be cheaper than deisels.....
and they are around 5 K cheaper to buy

mine is dual fuel, but i haven't run it on petrol ever. it still has the same tank of fuel in it from when i bought it.

a LWB i think is a better option. more comfortable, only because you are sitting further away from the rear axle, and you can sleep in the back on long trips or whatever. i only bought this shorty because it was there when i needed a car and it was cheap.

a friend tows his jeep with his diesel shorty and it is terrible on fuel - 30ltrs per 100k, and he has no turbo so it would be quicker to get out and walk a lot of the time.

im lookin at upgradin to a GQ LWB, hopefully diesel.
What is a good KMS one? i dont want to be doing much work on it when i get it, pretty much just normal servicing.
I have seen a couple here in adelaide around the 12-13k mark with under 200k on the clock.
i have also seen a few with about 250k on the clock at a half decent price, but not sure if thats getting a bit high.

I bought a clean GQ LWB wagon up here in brisbane for $9000. It is deisel and had 269000kms on the clock. i did buy it from a mechanic (I'm 3rd owner) and has been serviced religously. looked after properly the 4.2 deisel (TD42) is good for 500,000kms plus.
