recently bought a second hand gq with tb42. today was changing fan belts and plugs over & noticed that the fan had a bit of wobble in it. located the problem to the fan clutch. should there be any play between the shaft (the bit where it bolts onto the water pump pulley) & the bit where the fan bolts on (bit with the fins on it)? the bottom of the fan shroud, right at the bottom has been eaten ever so slightly by the fan, not sure if this was due to the fan wobbling or not though.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Chris
There shouldn't be any wobble whatsoever. Would suggest that the clutch fan is shot. Check your water pump as well. Whilst you're there check the plastic fan blades, as they crack with age.

water pump is fine, no issue with that. fins on fan look good but in the main body a few stress lines...probably from chewing away at plastic. rekon i should get a new one of those while i'm at it?
any ideas on price's for both parts?

you should be able to get the clutch fan for around $120 - $150 and the fan is around $60. Check on ebay.

fan $80 from EKW in Melbourne but you need to measure the bolt centres they are either 135mm or 145mm 93149700
Not sure about the clutch though

I paid $240 (trade price) for a new genuine nissan fan clutch for a GQ RD28T at allfourx4 - Newcastle. Saw a new chinese copy? on ebay for $195 but went genuine for quality.
tb42 fan clutch should be cheaper (was on ebay) but I wouldn't risk a chinese copy - could do a lot of damage if it comes apart.

picked up a replacement clutch for $260 from repco (comes with 2yr / 40 000km warranty). the tb42's made after october '91 use a different clutch, only $215 for a new one.
fan had to get from ebay, around $100.
nissan wanted around $700 all up for both parts...bit of a rip off i thought...

Sorry mate, can you link the thread you found? i think mine's on it's way out. started overheating today, and i'm not sure if it's because the timing's too far advanced, or if the fan clutch is slipping.
Cheers mate

Dont skimp on fan clutch or blades, genuine one's are dear but last longer. Tryed 3 non genuine one's did'nt work well, Spat the dummy, got genuine one all good. Dont skimp on anything to do with cooling systems with tb42s. Found that out the hard way.
