This is a long shot but have a look at the Range Rover air box. From memory the inlet, out let and box dimentions look like it may fit.

If it does, RangeRover were built for a usefull purpose. If not it is still a waste of recourses.

Nice engine swap 8) What about a GQ/Mav diesel precleaner in behind left headlight, running a good filter like a K&N or something. Could use standard snorkel setup, and run flexible hose from precleaner to current filter hose. Not sure if there would be enough airflow for the V8 though.

A GU (3.0TD) one might suit if you have space.. Hooks up right next to standard snorkel entry..

If you want to try the GQ pre-filter give me a PM and you can have one of the ones that i have laying around the shed

thanks brodiebuilt but don't think there will be enough air flow might try the 3.0l td patrol though anyone got a pic or dimensions of it i might have to move my coolant resevour but thats ok

I thought I had a photo somewhere of the 3TD engine bay but can't dig it up.. I'll take some happy snaps and measurements in daylight if I get a chance/remember and post them up..

John if you get stuck I'm sure my brother in-law (DTP Motorsports) will make you a custom job. Custom intercoolers and pipe work etc. is what he does most off. It would be made to full requirements (air flow volume, etc.) and would look sweet to.

Cheers
Linc

PS will get back to you sunday arvo about transporting the cab for you

do you think the 5ltr would draw more air than a diesel 4.2?

Bartso
19-09-2004, 02:52 PM
i think it would being a V8 i was thinking along the lines of more cylinders more petrol therefore more air needed i could be wrong though

embryo

im not 100% but it couldnt be much more air. 5 ltr and 4.2ltr is the capacity so that is close. a pre cleaner would fit perfectly. id be giving it a go first its the easyest option. and shouldnt be to expensive.

having the same problem, trying to find a filter box for my mates patrol with a Toyota 1UZ-FE 4L V8

all the wrecking yards we have been looking in dont have any of the pre filter box as this is what we are looking for, or possible the 2.8T filter box from a GQ?

I REPLACED MY AIR FILTER BOX FROM MY 2.8 DESIEL WITH A GU 3LTR WHICH FITTED IN NICELY.DIDN'T HAVE TO DRILL ANY MORE HOLES IN TO THE BODY AS THE AIRFILTER BOLTS LINED UP TO THE HOLES ALREADY THERE & ONLY HAD TO DO A COUPLE QUICK LITTLE MODS TO THE AIR FILTER.
THE MAIN REASON FOR THE CHANGE WAS IT LOT CHEAPER TO FIT A SNORKEL BY ABOUT 3 OR4 HUNDRED BUCKS, & HELL OF ALOT EASIERTO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER ELIMENT AS WELL. :)

I watch this thread with great interest as I have similar issues which I am trying to sort out with my mav. I'm thinking of something custom also so maybe we can get a good deal if getting the work done at the same time. Here is a pic, as you can see the air filter box that came with the turbo sits where i need to put a second battery. Don't have a clue what to do but the pre cleaner doesn't even have a filter in it?

hey link are the depths in the gu the same as a GQ i mean at the front there cause that looks like the way to go :also where abouts is the intake will i have to get a snorkle to suit GU or one for a GQ ?

Link

Not sure about depths, but ratool sounds like they've thrown one in a GQ so it should be alright.. The intake is in the centre of the box closest the guard.. Not sure about snorkels..

What quick little mods did you do and which snorkle did you use

the 4.2 GU looks exactly the same as the 3.0 GU filter housing.
From memory the 2.8GU and the 4.2GU use the same finer filter but you had problems with airflow in the GU 4.2 td.
I have a finer filter "vortex" in mine which flows more .

so are you trying to say that i won't get enough air flow for my 5.0l should i get custom

The factiry air intake on my 5.7L box is smaller than the input and output of the GU Filter box.. so doubt you'd have many problems unless you've worked it..

Bartso

ok then sounds like im going to go look for a 3.0l td air filter box

BigMav

hmmmmm... me too. I'd still like to see a picture of it in a gq to see how it matches up to the rest of it. I could just go down to the wreckers and take a look though.

what i'm saying is if you fit a vortex finer filter you will get better airflow than a standard finer filter

ratool
22-09-2004, 09:38 AM
sorry haen't got any pics but i'll try and get one. With the snorkel i just used the standard for the gq .but becouse i used the holes already in the guard for the filter box sat just off the inner guard where it sat against in the gu so i just cut the flat part that sat against the guard so the tubing that comes with the snorkel fits straight on. the snorkel that was used was for a petrol gq.
cheers

Didn't Finer Filter go out of business?? I heard that it did some time ago. :?

another reason for useing the same holes & keeping the box slightly away from the the guard is if don't you won't be able to close the bonnet.so moving it a inch or so away from the guard my bonnet closes nice and snuggly.
I'll post some pis tonight if i get a chance if not i won't get to do it till sunday.
cheers

what does a donalson one look like

grover
27-09-2004, 05:44 AM
donalson type is like you see on fork lifts , front end loaders ,ect
they are usualy round any thing from 150mm to 300mm wide and 3 to 400mm long and have the inlet in the side and the outlet in the end

ratool
