My Patrol GR has recently got a oil leak around the front nearside ball joint swivel. I’m guessing that it must be the half shaft seal that has gone as it looks like diff oil and theres no where else it could come from. I’ve looked at the workshop manual and it looks straight forward enough so I thought I might have a pop at changing the seal and repacking the bearings with grease myself. However there are some things I don’t know about cos I’ve never done one before:
Do I just need an oil seal? (presumably from Nissan?)
Or do I need to replace the swivel seal or any of the grease seals at the same time?
Does anyone supply a kit with all the bits in?
Any advise much appreciated….

Sounds like you need a swivel hub rebuild kit, like one of these on ebay in Australia: http://shop.ebay.com.au/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&_nkw=patrol+swivel+hub&_sacat=See-All-Categories. You will likely be able to find something like this available in the UK ebay or over on the continent. If Nissan makes a rebuild kit, maybe Nizbits might post up or PM you a Nissan part number and you could get it from your local Nissan dealership.

Nissan don't do a rebuilt kit but are happy to sell me the seal (£13) and any other seals if needed individually.
I think that you may be right and it would be better to get a rebuilt kit. Atleast then I have all the bits to hand if needed. However I can't find a kit in the UK, so have emailed down under to see if they will post me one.
Anyone know if I am right in thinking that the Aussie Patrol GU (Y61) will be the same front axle as the UK Patrol GR (Y61)?

Yep a Y61 rebuild kit will do the job for your Y61 GR, nissan dealers in OZ sell them and you can get after market ones also - look on ebay

Hi to a fellow pom,
as you have found out, if you go to nissan for the bits you will need
to take a large tube of KY jelly with you. Yes the oil seal is only £13
but if its all apart you might as well replace all seals and bearings.
Its possibly the lower swivel bearing on its way out anyway that causes
the leak. It always seems to be the left side that goes, possibly as axle
shaft is longer on that side so it only needs to be out a bit to start
rubbing on the seal a bit too much?
I bought a full kit for both sides on Ebay australia for about £125,
was a bit less really but then customs and parcel force wanting a slice too

I had a similar oil leak around the swivel hub myself recently, they found it to be the iner axle seal so be prepared for that as well.

Thanks to everyone for their advise, its much appreciated. The up shot seems to be what I probably suspected – whilst your in there do it properly and do the lot! Seals wear for a reason, and 120k miles is not bad.
With the bigbadwolf’s words still in my mind and the thought of Mr Nissan with his tube of KY, I found a supplier of rebuild kits on Aussie ebay (auskit-2008) who was very helpful and have ordered it though them. Shipping stings a bit, but then it’s quite a way for postie!

while its out check the shaft for straighness and if theres a groove in axel where the seal runs throw on a speedy sleve
in doing this you will insure that the job only gets done once..
