A dead 67 KL60 Patrol is being brought back to life. This project has only just begun but stage one is nearly over with. The truck blew a hole in the motor the size of my fist at 55,000 miles. Since I have nothing esle to do with it I am rebuilding from ground up. It is being done in phases starting with the frame. Got a good motor recently from a 65. Will use it or go v8. I may go with a whole new body on this truck. This isn't going to be anything to fancy, just a frame off resto.
Here is pictures of the frame resto and what the truck looked like before...

strewth ya got some crap out of that crossmember

they all got shiat in the crossmember, at least over here in the states. Plum packed full on all I have seen. Not hard to fix though if you have it torn down. Cut cap, clean out funk, grind out rust, treat with rust nuetralizer, reinforce crossmember and then weld on new cap....good as new.
I had been considering powder coating the frame, was even thinking about maybe going with a cool siler or grey color. But screw it that costs to much money and will take to much time. The next rebuild on a better truck and it will get a powder coated frame. The black stuff you see in the last few pics of the frame is rust nuetralizer. I could have blaster it but my blaster sucks bad and a lot of people feel blasting is not worth the hassle on a frame. Reason, inside fills with the blasting material and makes everything a biatch after that. This is being done with good ole manual labor. Started on frame by scrapiing large stuff, then moved to wire brush, then moved to grinders, then sanded with 40 grit, then sanded with 60 grit and then primed. Came out nice but it is a pain to get in all the tight areas by hand. This project is low budget and being built from mostly parts I have just laying around. When you do the frame this way it takes lot's of work and this is about 2 weeks here. Not full time though just in spare time. The idea here is the nicest truck I can build for the least amount of $$ and also to show off so things like new body parts.
Will post more pics of the entire build up as it progresses....

some more recent work after screwing around with my cheap blaster. These body parts should clean up good enough to use. front diff is ready for rebuild if I ever get the parts.

thanks!
No tooth brush man...sand blaster and soft wire brush on a Dewalt angle grinder. Knuckles, hubs and caps were sand blasted....hood blasted too as the surface rust is deep and blaster gets it gone fast. Dirty work but makes the funk bye bye fast. Parts washer helps too and is always full of junk. A lot of these parts had near 1" of funk on them which is not fun to clean up. But under most that funky greasy crud is some clean ass original parts!

sorry if you are on 56k...I am sure this is long to load if you are. :?
Here is updated pictures on the rebuild. The frame is pretty much done. It is shot in Imron etching primer. All I need to do is shoot it with the Imron gloss black I have. I rebuilt the cross meber. I rebuilt the bat box. I am a beginner welder. I am currently working the hood (bonet) which has some 50 small pit dents. It also had some broken welds which were making it weak and flimsy. The old baked on rusted paint is a real pita to remove. Air craft stripper don't get it, blaster was having trouble....all that works very well is soft wire brush on cut off tool or angle grinder. Sander works with some 80 grit but is slower than a brush. I rather wire brush it and then finish with sander. Any ways worked the hood alot tonight removing pits. There was deep surface rust in the hood but it is nearly gone now. I shall also treat the whole thing with rust nuetralizer before it gets shot with primer. I am tearing down the 65 as I plan to use the dash/firewall assembly. It is clean except on the outside caps/door posts. they are rotten bad and need replacement. The 65 has got some good leaves in the front, still packing the Nissan part number.
Not much else to say....

thanks Screwy! I wonder sometime if anybody even looks at these projects on got on some sites...
My welding sucks bad, it is a stick welder. Looking into a nice mig set up as I have lot's of body work to do.
The paint I am using on the chassis is expensive. $80 a gallon plus more for addatives. But here si what the Dupont rep said aboput it on a forum....
You have a bullet proof system, it will last 20 years given you apply it at the recomended thickness it;s better than any automotive system and the only thing better would be powder
That makes me stoked! The paint has cost more $$$ than any other parts of the resto so far. So real happy it is the bomb....
The whole point here is to make it new again. So glad it is working out...I am shooting the frame tomorrow with the top coat if I am lucky. So it will be done and I will post one more pic of the frame all painted up. The one above it is just in the Imron primer.

Dude thats some resto work ur putting in :o
The old patrol will luv ya for it :)
I`m interested in the paint system ur using, i have`nt seen many people use imron, from memory its a fleet paint, i have my old rig painted in imron 5000 ( i think its 5000 ) and as the dude said it has very good properties. At my old workplace we used it on aircraft.

this is exactly what I used....all these products are the industrial line of paints.
primer is Imron 2.8PR, 62-1640 black
primer activator is Imron FG-062
paint is Imron 2.8HG, 333-67640 black
paint activator is Imron VG-6005
accelerator is Imron VHY691
The etching primer is super thick stuff. I shot it with my 1.7 gun and almost needed a bigger one. The actual paint is also very thick stuff. I shot it with a 1.4 gun which worked out ok. I put both primer and paint on x-tra thick. Paint I did 2 coats. It is all pretty easy stuff to use and apply. But it is also all super gnarly in terms of fumes. I am building a fresh air system for the next time I paint with it. Also making a make-shift paint booth here in the shop. You don't realize how dirty your enviroment is untill you do some painting. Clean is for sure important when painting.
I think prep of what you plan to paint is key. Also how you apply this stuff is important. If you do it right which is pretty easy it looks great. Seems to me to be damn tough too, the Dupont rep said it will last 20 years and it does look like it now that it is all cured. I probily have 5-8mm thick on the chassis!
The rep reccomended some other products for top side of the truck, I think the 5000 line was one of them. But I might just go Imron on the entire truck. Since these are old 4x4's and even new were not perfect I am not concerned with a showroom paint job. As long as it looks good I will be happy. Most important to me is durablity, how long it lasts and all that jazz.
BTW, I am either going all black on this truck or black and grey/silver.

love looking at the rebuild pics, really shows how much effort goes into it.
