Hi,

I am looking for a cheap older 4wd which I can mod and take off road and not worry too much about. There is a GQ II Ti, 4.2 petrol, auto that has caught my eye. It has 230,000km on the clock. What mileage are these rigs good for and is there anything specific that I should look out for? What sort of fuel consumption should I expect?

Thanks

hi mate

i have a 4.2lt petrol GQ the bottom ends are pretty much bulletproof, you could get at least 500,000 klm out of them if it has had some sort of a service history, you will most likely have to get the head done atleast once or twice.depending one the motor and the gas setup you could expect 320 to 420 klm out of 90lt of gas with 31 inch tyers.apart from that they are bloody good motor that produce some half decent power. mine has a 2 1/2 inch exaust and extactors i put elctronic ignition system on it and it puts out 125 Kws at the wheels with 31s and 120 with 33inch claws thats on petrol i get about 10Kws less on gas. good luck with getting your hands on a good one you can get them pretty cheap now i think.cheers

I purchased my GQ TI 4.2 Petrol/gas last july for $6500. Absolutely no rust and all the receipts from new with 347000ks on the clock. Since I purchased it I have spent approx $10K and rebuilt most of it.
Here is a list: Repaired all power windows, New radiator, Added external transmission cooler, New tyres, Rebuilt cylinder head to LPG specs, Rebuilt transmission with extreme valve body, New fuel pump.

They are a great vehicle. I use mine to tow a 1500kg boat and it does it with ease.

mine had 230000kms on the clock, the bearing end cap came off the 3rd piston and pushed the bottom of the conrod through the block, was running beautiful till that moment,

loving the 4.2ltr diesel however

i picked mine up about a month ago, 92 GQ ST all the normal crap on the ST power windows etc around 330000 on the clock auto, she drives great only problem ive had is that i drowned it in salt water which caused a couple of electrical probs but nothing major. brought it for 5k which i felt was a really good price, no rust other than in the rear window slide's which is common.

at 230,000km it is only a baby. expect to get at least 400,000km. Dinosaur engineering - slow and solid, just don't rev the f^#k out of it and you're fine.

Mines a 4.2 carby on gas 300,000km, about to die after 7 years of no love and hard 4wding for 100,000km. Did not like the transition from weekend fun to daily and thinking of upgrading.
Edit:
But love it to much (and the wife just said no:( )

Good engines for high ks - TB42 etc, TD42 and SD33/T avoid the ZD30 and RD28T ones.
