Could also be your connection to the gearbox, mine filled with mud and was a little tempermental, just pull it apart, clean it with contact cleaner, use some white grease on it and puy it back together, good as new. If this doesn't work, speedo replacement isnt as easy as it sounds.

Thanks for the advice and links. I'll have a fiddle with it and see what happens...if it gets fixed I'll post the details.
