have you looked under the panel behind the battery? it screws off with 2 screws, i think there are some relays under there, ac might be 1 of them.

Wait for mikegq (our resident auto sparky :ahah: )to chime in and reply. If he hasn't got any answers then I'll got out and find it one one of my GQ's or look for my manual (still can't find it  ) and see what I can't sort out. for you.

What is the problem????

You haven't said year model or engine type as they are all different.
I will assume its a GQ. The relays are under that black cover in the engine bay as stated Pre 91 they have one petrol/diesel is second from rear coloured blue on the tin cover itself rare to fail.
after 91 there are two beside each other second and third from rear end on cover itself. Blue or brown is the ac relay the black one is a cut out relay this one is the one that gives trouble change it and this should fix it in my experience (also as you are a sparky you will try and test it with your trusty fluke will not work need load for it to fail, bitter experience) By chance you have a wagon with a rear aircon unit, this relay will interfer with the works do not know how to test / fix, just change it, its blue and second from the front on the cover, unplug it and nothing works (its in series some how)

On a 88 petrol you only have one relay they usually don't fail.
I would start looking for a loose wire. Another bit that can cause this problem is the high pressure cut out switch on the drier worth checking with your Hioki.

Thanks for the intro Big
Nathan, don't worry about the relay which is under trhe dash drivers side that isn't u'r problem.
The problem is that over winter u'r system has lost some refrigerant through a small leak. what is happening is that the system has a low pressure cut out switch in it, and when the system is stationary the refrigerant pressure in the low side of the system(between Tx Valve and Compressor) equalises witht the high side presure(thus being higher than normal)-( i am tryig to avoid explaining how an a/c system works or ill be here for hours, so take my word) this increaser in presasure is enough to close the contacts in the pressure switch, thus making the A/c come on when u initially turn A/C on, but soon after when the compressor starts to spin the low side pressure drops( this is due to TX and comp, this as well as the high pressure going up causes a refrigeration cycle where the refrigerant condences in the high and cools(to -10 degrees in the low(evaporator)). as soon as this occurs and the low side pressure drops the pressure switch cuts out, as the refrierant pressure is low and thus no oil will lube the system(causing comp failure). and obviously when the a/c cuts out the pressure rises and the switch cuts in again, and so on and so forth,.

So mate in short
I would imagin u have a small leak and that needs to be fixed and then regased. if in adelaide i can help u.
but no accredited a/c tech will just regas it with out fixing the leak anymore or we can loose out licence,.

hope i have helped, with out baffeling u

cheers
