Quick intro:

1992 Maverick family wagon, 4.2 diesel naturally asthmatic, electric windows, standard seats with full sheepskin covers front/rear, still running factory exhaust, cargo barrier, ARB bullbar, 33 BFG muds/34 JT II's/35 Centipedes, 217,000 young, mildly lifted suspension :D , front and rear ARB's, dual batteries, pics to come.

Used mostly now as a work vehicle/long distance hauler getting to and from 4x4 events that we film on video.

Now I don't claim to be any guru on the subject of Patrols (or anything for that matter :D ) and this site will eventually contain all sorts of cutting edge tech for mods, but here are a few simple helpful tips I've found along the way to help get the most out of my Maverick for the long haul.

It will grow as I have the time to post up more...

Pre-cleaner element. I still have the precleaner element (barrel type on the inner passenger side fender) with a K&N filter fitted. To keep the bugs from wedging in the element I place one of the wifes old stockings over the element. The stocking on the element wicks oil from the element and becomes another facet of filtration, and extends the sevice interval of the KN element, and whent the stocking is cruddy, rip it off and replace with another 30 seconds tops. On the long road hauls, put the 'foot' part of the stocking you cut off over the snorkel head for the night time (big bug) sections for extra filtering. I laughed when I saw this mentioned in 4wd Monthly a while back, as I already had this for about 2 years before the article...

It does net you more power, but for me the precleaner keeps the main element cleaner for longer, as the KN is quicker to clean and re-oil.

If you remove the pre-cleaner, UniFilter make a reusable sock that fits inside your snorkel to work as a p/c, with . presumably, less restriction of air flow.

I THINK ITS FINNER FILTER WHO ALSO MAKE A SOCK FOR THE SNORKEL. NOT LIKE THE UNIFILTER THAT FITS INSIDE OF THE SNORKEL BUT FITS OVER THE INTAKE OF THE SNORKEL SO WHEN YOU LEAVE THE BLACK STUFF BEHIND YOU JUST SLIP IT OVER AND AWAY YOU GO NO HAVING TO STUFF AROUND WITH TAKING THE TOP OF THE SNORKEL OFF. :P

I have the uni filter sock and it says on the packet not suitable for highway use only for dusty conditions
So I would assume that would mean it restricts air flow more.
I used to run without the pre cleaner but recently put a K&N one in but they dont make an exact replacement for the stock one so I had to match it up to fit and I run a K&N in the main air cleaner
K&N claim that you only need the single filter on the top but I would not risk it. Its a diesel engine that drives off road not a performance engine that drives on road or on a circuit
I would rather loose a small amount of power which is not really noticed then repair my engine due to crap getting though without having the pre cleaner
Just my 2c
