View Full Version : Lifting a GQ SWB
What is the easyest way to do a 4 inch spring & shock lift in a GQ shorty? Any info would be grately apprecated. Cheers, Kane.

you need:
4 springs
4 shocks
front and rear adjustable panhard rods
caster bushes / plates
extended brake lines
gearbox packers (probably)
they are the basic things required

Aprt from the obvious (coils/shocks). The tail shaft is to short for big lifts. Things people have done to over come this are double-cardan joint tail shafts. gearbox packers, engine lifts, adjutsable upper and lower rear arms.
I am hoping I can get away with just making the lower arms longer by 12mm-16mm (cant remember which one it is). This should make the unis travel the same kind of angle.
Have been told this should work with a 4"coils. I only plan on going to 3"coils, so I should have a bit more of a safty margin.
On the front you may just get away with out castor bushes/plates/drop brackets/ or new radius arms from nskae etc. The same for the panhard rods, it will pull the axle to the side but it will probably be only about 10mm.
Extending the brake lines is a must. I got qouted $30 for rubber lines to the right length or $60 for braided.

turps you may have to just do adjustable top arms as 35'tyres will hit the rear of the rear guard opening badly, with stock length bottom arms the tyres will just touch both the front and rear of the rear wheel arch.
At least it did on mine with 35 BFG MT's :)

Front isnt a problem as I have trimmed the guards and put radius arm spacers in. This seems to clear 35's with no problems.
As for the rear the guard is trimmed a little already and I dont mind trimming abit more.
Also after talking to Bazzle one night, I think the LWB has slightly bigger and/or different shape gaurds by a tiny bit (not noticeable). This was brought up when we where talking about where my tyres rubbed and comparing to his LWB.

I'm in the process of doing a 5" spring lift and a 2" body lift on my project GQ/Mav shortie. It will have 36 Simex ET2's. You will need a double cardan joint ($1200 for a DC) for anything above 3" in the SWB and either adjustable control arms or new fixed lengths. I'm going for fixed length custom made control arms to suit my rig. The front diff will be moved forward 30mm and the moved back 10-20mm. You can use drop mounts on the front such as Bazzle has on his.
Cheers,
Andrew

MMMM 4 - 5 " lifts on a SWB GQ are fun....
Vibrations will annoy the *****e out of you. A spicer DC tailshaft shouldn't set you back anymore than 700 - 800 dollas. The important thing to note with these DC joints is that you can't go any higher than 6" as they will be reaching their max operating angle. So if you are paying 1200 it should be for an ULTRA high angle driveline application like the ones in Peter Antunac's truck they have max operating angles of 45 degrees without vibrations.
If you do decide to go a DC setup you WILL have to rotate your rear housing back (or your pinion up whatever you wanna say). There needs to be zero angle at the pinion end for a DC shaft to actually work (ie; point the pinion into the angle of the shaft ). When you do this it puts a nasty bow in your coils and your rear lower shocks mounts start to point towards the ground. Both your coil perches and shock mounts will need cutting and rotating to correct this :)
This has to be done or metal rubs on metal and shock bushes get chewed out. Besides you can tuck your lower shock mounts up a bit for some high clearance action 8)
If you have a drum brake rear end like me you may well consider swapping to a disc brake rear end and then get everything rotated and at the same time whack in two lockers....mmm money...
But at the end of the day the tighter turning circle, cool looks and front wheels in the air are all worth it.   I'm not bitter.... it is just my mate has just whacked in 7" coils/shocks in his LWB the only mods he has had to do are bolt on castor plates and adj steering arm. Honestly a Lifted, locked shorty equals :D :D :D :D
