Hi All,
Hope to get some advice prior to me spending my hard earned!
I am looking at buying a 1997 4.2 diesel patrol DX cab chassis.
It has 176,000kms on the clock and a negotiated price tag of $16,000.
I know the kms are very low and the car itself ia in very good condition,however is there anything I should be paticularly cautious of or problems to look out for before a handshake?

Mate I would just recommend a general but thorough going over by a good mechanic prior to buying it and if that doesn't show up anything major then grab it I say. You are pretty safe with a TD42 engine and the GQ as a whole is a pretty safe bet.

Thanks very much for the advice Mate,I had a RACQ inspection done on it and for $160 was well worth it...No major problems were found and I am now the proud owner of a '99 GQ Patrol!!!
Thanks again...you'll probably be seeing quite a lot of my name on the site now asking for advice!

No problem mate and congratulations on the purchase. Do You know what spec it is? As in DX, RX, ST or TI

Is this your first 4wd?

Its a DX....only got 176,000ks and is in great nick.
had a hilux for a couple of years,it was petrol though..have wanted a Patrol for a long time especially a diesel...cant think of a better start!! my mate has a '02 ST 3.0lr and i'm really impressed.

People feel free to correct me if im wrong

The dx is the bottom of the range, vinyl floors etc. The ST is the middle addition carpet etc and the TI is the top of the range with leather seats and electric windows. There are other differences but i cant recall them all. I also think that the RX was the 2.8 turbo diesel, but am unsure.

The RX came in a 4.2 as well, my dad has one
The RX was in-between the DX and ST in spec levels, was discontinued in the GU

dont buy the gu with a 3.0...badly designed motor...ps this might upset some ppl...
