View Full Version : Noise when hubs locked

I seem to have developed a rumbly noise and vibration when travelling with my front hubs locked. In the past I couldn't tell the difference. I recently upgraded my 2" OME to a 3" Dobinsons and had caster correction done. I immediately assumed that the angle difference must be the cause and my uni's or slip joint may be tight, however I am sure that I have driven with locked hubs since the upgrade with no problems. I removed to prop shaft and inspected the uni's and slip joint and they move free and seem fine. On a test drive without the shaft and locked hubs, there is no noise. My fear is that it may be my transfercase. Has any one else had this problem, your ideas would be appreciated. Its a 91 maverick Lwb TD42.

its probably the front drive shaft flanges/ unis getting used to the new angles they are being driven at. Seeing as you lifted it, the front tailshaft will now be at steeper angles and will be wearing differently. No dout this is the wearing/grinding your getting.

agree, almost guaranteed to be uni's with the new angles.... prob a good time to change ur uni's anyway, they are probably original, u can pull the front shaft and get them changed, then pull the rear shaft and run in front wheel drive till the uni's are done.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but your right, it looks like it was the Unis. The thing that got me was that I took the shaft off and the Unis and slip joint felt fine, I even took it to a prop balancer in Bankstown who has a great reputation and he said the shaft was like new. Probably the new angle was the problem because a bit more grease and a few Km's and the noise is all but gone. What was interesting though, is the balancer guy said that you should have both flangeplates parallel regardless of the angle. I have noticed that even at standard height I dont think this would be achievable on the front axle and it only gets worse as the car is raised.
Thanks for the replies
