Hi guys, Wanting to chuck some LED lights onto my GU patrol. Basically 2 rear, 2 left side and 2 on right side, activated by a remote control unit.
LED lights -- Current draw 900mA @13.8v [10-24v range]
Now im wanting to use 15 amp rated wiring with a 15 amp inline use, will this be sufficient in my madness?
Made up a diagram to get better idea of how i imagine doing it.
Your running 6 led lights 900mA each which is 5,400mA total which is 5.4 watts divide that by 12 because your car has a 12v battery which gives you the amps that will be drawn in you case 0.45 amps so you don't need wire any where near 15 amp rating for the job and you may be able to use a 1 or 2 amp fuse. Someone correct me if I went wrong so I don't give Matty180 a bum steer thanks.
you got the formula right but used the wrong interpretation in the equation. The leds are 5400mA which is 5.4A @ 12v. So the wiring your using is a bit over kill but bigger is better. Just use a 7A fuse to protect the wiring and you'll be fine.
If your using one of the ir remote units from eBay be aware that they are only rated to 5-6A so you will be pushing its capacity.
I've got 4 21watt LED work lights on my roof rack and they are fed by individual runs of 1.85mm2 wire through individual switches and the switches are fed by a single 4.58mm2 wire- yes that's total overkill but I did it before I really knew what I was doing and bigger was always better with wiring.
This setup also lets me upgrade the roof lights to higher wattage should the need arise as currently, my 21 watt lights are only drawing 1.6 amps each @12.8 volts.
They look like the same remotes out of China with a sticker mate. I have tried and tested heaps of them and they all work the same. I was buying those remotes over 6 years ago so I don't know whos copying who there. lol
Personally if I was having anything custom made I wouldn't be using the same remote box and remote as the $3 ones on ebay.
