I once came across a 63 soft top in the same area. It was also yellow. A guy down there had been clearing some land for a guy, covered in blackberry bushes. Under all the blackberry bushes was this old 63 Patrol soft top. The guy doing the work knew what it was as he had one or two others. So he got the 63. I think the motor was long gone from it and he was parting it along with a rolled one he had too. I was in Oregon, I am from Eugene, so zipped on down to your area and grabbed a bunch of parts. The 63 was in good condition, even after sitting under blackberry bushes for who knows how many years. I am actually using it's windshield frame in the 64 resto seen in my signature.
I found my first Patrol up in Corvallis back in 1991. Not long after I found 5 of them south of Eugene on the I-5 just north of Roseburg. One of those little hick towns on the HWY. Bought some parts from the guy off a few of them. I think they are long gone though as I checked to see if they were still there 10-15yrs ago.
Your 63 was probably sold in Medford or Ashland originally. There was a Datsun dealer in that area in the 1960's. It does sound to run very good.
*Edit* sorry for some reason I was thinking Albany was down south by Ashland and Medford. Beena long time since I lived in Oregon, 19yrs. Any ways, there is the story about the yellow 63 above. Like I say I bought my first Patrol in 1991 in Corvallis right next to where you are.
It is very rare. There was only 2616 Nissan Patrols sold in the USA between 1962-1969. Out of that 2616, roughly 950 were soft tops. The earlier year of the truck, in my opinion, the more rare. Less trucks sold in the early years. They came in a lot of models and were made from 1960-1979 with a new model of the same style lasting until 1984. What you have is known as a 60-series Patrol, in Australia they just call it a G60. Model designation for yours is simply L60. "L" for left hand drive and "60" for series of truck. Patrols were the main competition worldwide for Land Cruisers.
I want to put in a Cummings 4BT or Mercedes turbo diesel. What value would you place on the motor, transmission, and radiator?
First of all, it is worth the most restored back to original. I understand if you don't want to do that though. A factory motor, trans, t-case and rad are not worth a lot. $500-1000 if in decent order. Maybe a bit more if in very nice condition and you can prove it. The engine bay is tall but not very long and not super wide. The firewall is boxed in at the footwell, making v8 swaps difficult. The 4BT is a good choice, I think it will fit in there nicely. I would go 4BT to NV4500 or H55 Toyota 5spd and I would try to use the FJ60/62 Land Cruiser t-case known as the split case. The NV4500 is large and you will have to do a lot of work to make it fit. Since you going non-original any ways, I would drop in Land Cruiser axles, either FJ40 or FJ60. The stock axles are not very strong, coarse spline, front will be very old school "tracta" joints rather than CVs.
I have pictures and video of it running. Super clean.
Shame to butcher up a early year and very clean Patrol. But it is your truck and if that is what you want to do by all means go for it. If you mean sell the 2nd hand engine, trans and such, I suggest Ebay, craigslist or 60Patrol.com.
