Smile 1984 MQ Build/Refurbishment

I bought a 2nd-hand MQ about 2 weeks ago for my first car and plan to have it ready for my 16th birthday next year and Deni Ute Muster and of course the lovely drivers license, I have driven it a few times and am already in love with it. I have been a long time Nissan lover.
At the moment it is being kept at the workshop where I work so I can work on it but I think after I have it roadworthy and registered I will take it home as I can't do much with it at work (Because of this it might be a slow moving thread but it will be done within the year hopefully).

With it came a Turbo Diesel engine in mint condition that I intend on putting in after registration to try and reduce troubles, other things as well like bullbar, sidesteps, all the good stuff along with respraying it blue or red, I'm undecided so please tell me what you think of the two.
I'm obviously not very experienced at this so tips and ideas are welcome but it must be P-Plate approved for Victoria, Australia..... For now!

Planned List of Upgrades:
ARB Bullbar, Sidesteps, Rear-Step Towbar
WARN Winch
Safari Snorkel
ARB Air Lockers and Compressor
Old Man Emu Suspension
Long Ranger Tanks
Cooper Tires STT Armor-Trek 3's
New Wheel set (Undecided on make)
Rust Removal and Complete body Respray
Turbo Diesel Engine (Unsure of Make)
New Stickers and Badges
Plus lots of accessories like UHF, fun little stickers that bag out Toyota, interior bits and pieces.

I hope you will stick around and watch it grow

Always good to see another MQ/MK owner around.
Throw some pics up of her.

The standard yellow is a pretty average looking colour lol.
Metallic blue works well on them IMO.

Just general photos... seen a few yellow shorties for sale, want to see if I recognise this one!

Got a few photo's of the beast.. Interior, under the hood and the sidesteps that came with it that I plan on putting on temporarily.
I also discovered the info on the second engine. It's a 3.3L In-Line 6 Turbo Diesel, So it's the same as the current one only with a turbo. I'm yet to go and have a look at it as I am short of time but as soon as I do there will be photos.

Can't see any photos here.
that 3.3 turbo diesel is an SD33T - a very good engine and the most desirable in an MQ/MK.
If I were you I'd drop the turbo engine in your car, or at least the turbo setup.

That's annoying because I can see them. I'll try fiddling with a few things to try and fix it.
I plan on putting the whole thing in as it is complete through to gearbox, minus the turbo and mint condition by my understanding. Can't wait to put it in

The only problem with a turbo is you always want more.
Bigger turbo, more boost, exhaust, intercooler etc.

Pics work now.
Looks good, can't see much in the way of rust which is good.
Looks like the rad support panel has been replaced at some point in its life.

And some armourall on that dash will make it look 100x better. MQ dashes don't stand up to the sun very well.

Ooh yeah, if you have a turbo you must let everyone know it Haha.
Come next payday I plan on ordering a snorkel, was going to get a Safari Snorkel through work but I might get a Patrol one, not 100% yet..... I am never going to be able to save for the turbo I'll be needing Hah :/

Removed the rear seats and vinyl from the floor and wheel wells to create some space. I'm now trying to decide what to put in place, I had a thought of checkered steel plating but I'm not sure as it would be heavy I'd imagine but it's just a thought, feel free to send yours this way and I can think something up for it.
I'm also trying to think of ideas for a roof rack as I have a fiberglass canopy so I can't really put a roof rack on it, not sure I'm just playing with a few things at the moment
I also gave her a wash, looks like new!

Checker plate looks cheap and nasty IMO, it'll be tougher than the standard trim, but i just think it looks rubbish. All of my cars have standard floors, 2 vinyl and 1 carpet and 2 car has standard side panels and 1 has vinyl covered MDF.
How come you don't want to put the standard floor and trims back in? If you are going to put a new floor covering down, paint the floor with bitumen paint, and if you don't want to put new floor coverings down, paint the floor with rhino liner or a similar ute tub liner.

You can put a roofrack on the fibreglass, most I have seen are bolted directly through the top of the canopy, but a member on here, Outback MK, put mini gutters on the canopy which were bolted in between the top and side panels of the canopy, there was a thread about it too.

I can agree with you on the checker plate, just toying with ideas at the moment though so I'm open to everything. I will be getting the cab re carpeted so I might get the back done with it even, so many decisions!

Yeah, I'll see if I can get a frame installed on the inside of the canopy like the ARB ones we fit at work, I'm unsure of whether they make any for this model. We have had utes come in with caved in canopies because roof racks were mounted without supports. I was considering looking for a steel canopy with the gutters, would make things easy!

Personally I would get the back redone too, but I like my interior to be in good nick and look tidy. You spend all your time inside the car, so may as well make it nice.

I'm not surprised that you've seen collapsed canopies at all. If you're handy with a welder you may be able to knock something up, otherwise you'll just have to keep the weight low.
And yep! Steel canopies are great. Soooo much easier to mount a rack on.

Sweet looking bus dude! Loving it. Now for some mods and she'll be a beast, definitely drop that turbo donk in.
Btw where you located? You can add it into your user info so comes up with every post.
