Default 2.8 turbo replacement cost???

Hey guys, just wondering how much a turbo replacment would cost on a 2.8 td???
My mate bought the vehicle 2 days ago and after a trip to straddie today , it wouldn't start for ages then blew a heap of smoke out once it fired up.
Limped it back to the main land and had been told the turbo has gone.
Any one done this or know of a rough estimate to replace/recondition?????

Thanx in advance!!!!

Dazza

$1500 + postage from http://dencodiesel.com/store/comersu...idCategory=115

Or try Nizzbits.

Rebuilding the turbo depends on whats happened to it.

Did it fail as he was driving or did it just not want to fire up in the morning??

G'day Dazza, I just had it done July last year by West End Diesel, total job costing $2250. I was charged $400 labour, $1400 for the turbo, and another $450 for Oils and filters and stuff. I know I was completely ripped off and it could have been done a lot cheaper, but I was in a hurry and didn't have time for alternative options. Options to make it cheaper...: 1. First find out if you need to replace the turbo or can it be fixed with a revision kit. You'll need to take it off, open it up and see if the housing is damaged. It might just be that you only need to replace the moving parts and the bearings (there are revision kits for sale). 2. If it does need to be replaced, source your own after market Turbo.
Good luck. Andre

Sourcing an aftermarket turbo for the GU RD28ETi is harder than you think. The manifold flange is not common by any means and the space between the block and chassis rail (cant go topmount as she aint crossflow) is limited.

Unless you have got time and money on your side just put the standard GT1752S back on. Its not a bad turbo (Bentley use a pair of them on a 4.4l V8 ) but they are not awesome either.

have u actually checked thats its the turbo ????
hard to start and blowing smoke when starts could also be dud glow plugs
and excess smoke will be excess diesel in bores
plenty of NON turbo diesels have this problem

Cheers guys.
We went down main beach and parked up on a shelf whilst high tide came and went.
He was parked nose up about 20 deg, and after about 3 hours when we were leaving it wouldn't Start.
Occasionally it would after a while but stall straight away.
Once the car was on level ground ( after snatching) it fired up but heaps of smoke was bellowing out all the way back to the ferry.
He said he took it to a guy who is a mech who he knows and was told he is not 100% certain but thinks the turbo has gone..
He isn't a member of this forum yet so thought I would help him out and post on his behalf...
