Default Can you roll start a Diesel

I havnt tried it..

Can you roll start a Manual 3.0L Diesel ?

In the past if my battery was flat I would roll start my little Toyota Corolla.

Can the same be done for Diesels ?

Marc

I believe as long as you have enough power to heat the glow plugs you can (or if the motor has already been running).

I'm always a little skeptical of roll starting a turbo'd vehicle though. And I reacon with a diesel you'd need a fair hill to get the momentum required to spin an engine with a compression ratio of 18:1

But at the end of the day thats just a personal theory I've not tried it to know. I have jump started the vehicle once though and it took a fair amount of convincing jumping from a V8 Fairlane

use second or third gear and you will be right.
you can always spary a smidgeon of aerostart in the intake to get a cold cranky diesel to start by roll starting it too...

Do you need some electrical power for the fuel cutoff to open?

it pays to have have some power to get the electronics working otherwise you will need to get up a decent speed just to get enough power off the alternator to run everything.

18:1 compression is not all that low for DI diesels. IDI is a bit different, much more heat loss really need glows and good compession. 15:1 in some of the later diesels is a bit more interesting.

we have towed a truck with the tractor and got it started that way and one was done in reverse.
one case where a lady driver got it started by rolling it backwould down a hill and started it in reverese gear.
however thats all with DI truck motor that doesn't need glows to start.

Mine's the same model as yours and did it a few weeks ago when the battery died.

The CRD most likely will not, cant get fuel pressure up to the rail or enough power to get the ECU to open injectors.

Thnaks Guys

Was curious to know but my thoughts were more around the fact that there are no spark plugs so wasn't sure if ignition will occur.

You sure can roll start a CRD. As above, 2nd gear works a treat.

Yes it works fine.
I did it with my TD42.

We even did it only by pushing it backwards with 2 people
But I still had enough battery to glow it.

As soon as he dumped the clutch it stripped all the teeth of reverse gear lol.

After my brother in laws effort I would say not lol. Might be something to do with most reverse gears being straight cut? And it might try to spin the motor the wrong way?

I had the misfortune of a completely flat battery in the multi storey car park at Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne. By the time I had pushed it down four ramps to level 1 we concluded that you must need some power for the fuel supply solenoid to be open. There were three other outcomes:
  1. I was F%$#&d
  2. SWMBO wasn't on speaking terms
  3. Several oncoming motorists had an adrenalin rush for the day!
So if its completely dead ring someone for help and avoid my experience!

I heard starting in reverse was bad....VERY bad in fact. I can't see why but the bloke who told me was certainly in the know.

I used to roll start my old Discovery TDi with no problems at all but it had next to no electrics so that probably helped.

I wouldn't want to try to roll start the new CRD although apart from the electrics issue and the fact that its not the easiest engine to start on a cold morning, it should work.

Anyway...to avoid the issue, I just fitted a mother of a second battery with an isolator that allows me to switch it in in the event the first one is flat.

Roll start in 2nd or 3rd, lock the hubs and put it in 4WD. That way when you jump off the clutch, as the rear lifts, the torque and weight transfer to the front wheels will make thing easier to get going.
Works a treat when the second battery isn't up to the task of jumpstarting.
