hey everyone,
i know this has been covered one million times but nothing i read gave me an answer that i was looking for. Basically it started slowly getting warmer & warmer now sitting around 3/4 or just over on long hill climbs, the egts never go over 510c, i have replaced a few items tryning to cure this problem -radiator standard size (replaced due to old tank spiltting) -thermosat 92c -radiator cap -water pump is only 20,000kms old -viscous hub all belts are fine, you can 4wd it hard all day and drive around town or the highway no movement of the gauge. it will only get hot on long hill climbs but when i first got it the temp never went far over half anyhelp or suggests would be great! thanks russell

Its just what TD42s do.
Personally Id sell it and get an engine more suitable for australias climate.

wouldnt worry mate as its been covered 3/4 is actually well within the running temps specified in the manual. mine was doing exactly that yesterday on the way home went up to 3/4 on long hill climbs then slowly back down to 1/2

Well benno its not what they do i have had td42 with alot more mods on 35's and it never got hot & as for engines well there is no better motor then what i have! td42 are by far the most realiable patrol engine built!
thanks mark but it s a bit too close to hot for my likings it never used to go just over half. im not after a debate im after a fix!!!

Upgrade to a 3.0?
haha! (flamesuit on!) Nah, seriously, it is what they do, and if it's within the 'normal' range, then why would you worry? Maybe drop a cog on such hills. Might be slower, but it'll be working alot less hard.

Why are you running a 92 deg thermostat?
I would have thought a 82 deg or there abouts would be better. I also agree with smoke screen re the possible faulty temp sender or gauge. Have you considered the ECUTalk gauge to read the actual coolant temp?

Even though it shows a 76.5 DegC on Nissan fast.

Just had similar problem with mine 2005 TD42Ti towing 21ft van up hills in 38deg heat. changed thermostat and the new one is marked 82deg while orig one was marked 72 deg. I'll try it for a while but it only seems to be happening when ait temp goes over 35deg.

so you have a thermostat that is set to open at 92degrees instead of mid 70's and you wonder why its running a quarter again hotter than usual
why dont you fit a 110degree thermostat? then you could really cook your motor.

My 4.2td has a non genuine turbo water cooled the return line is fitted to the heater hoses below the themosat which gives a really bad reading not to mention turning of the airconditioning off. I have replumded it above the themosat feeding directly into the radator, but it still heats up the housing and the temp sending units. More plumbing is needed.

i had a look at the viscous fans compared to a gq, the gq are 40mm bigger with 60mm deeper fan blades so i might try one of those and see if there is any difference.

Go and get a full pressure test done
Lower temp thermostats work more but keep it cooler After market temp guages seem to be more accurate
