Default Patrol loss of torque especially when towing

Hi fellow readers, I own a 2001 GU Petrol/Gas patrol (auto) and tow a Jayco Eagle Outback which I believe is around 1100kg. Can anyone offer some advice regarding why my vehicle struggles to tow uphill regardless of whether on petrol or gas. On the open highway I may be doing around 100-110kms but as soon as there is a slight incline, the Patrol can't handle it and will easily drop back to around 80kms. You really notice the lag on any incline and it isn't pleasant at all. I drop it back to 3rd from Drive and even use the overdrive on incline approach just to get the rig up the hill - surely the patrol can't be this bad. Considering it is rated to tow 2500kg, I reckon if I towed something this heavy I wouldn't even make it up a hill. I have had the gas serviced and the petrol done some 5,000kms ago. It ran slightly better but still tows like an old dog. No modifications have been made to the vehicle except a hyclone filter.

Someone suggested it is probably the fuel injectors - they could be dirtly and need cleaning. I have run a couple of tanks of optimum unleaded including the injector clean you buy off the shelf to put into the tank, but still no noticeable difference. To tell you the truth my Patrol doesn't cope all that well on inclines even when not towing.

Just thinking out loud....but when was your auto serviced.

I have a TB45 manual and dont have any power problems towing even with 2+ tonns.

If the truck is running the same on gas and petrol then the injectors are probably ok because the gas system doesn't use them. I have to put my foot down quite a bit in my 4.5 trying to maintain 100ish uphill with a 800kg trailer. I always turn overdrive off when towing. I agree, they lack power for a 4.5 petrol motor although they keep on going though!

depending on where you are and who does the Gas / petrol tune I can only surgest you do the checks and find A GOOD ROLLER DYNO tune place in your area.
If your in brisbane QLD try Mike vine Turbo Dyno tune.
Strange thing about gas and petrol is that they need different amount of advance in the ignition curve, Most cowboy gas fitters are just that and will only tune for gas or petrol.
In cases like this a duel curve ignition system is a must or one or the other or both will will suffer and give poor performance.
I must say I dont have any relibale in put for a 4.5 as I run the older 4.2 petrol, but one would think you should have more power than a standard 4.2.

Please keep us posted on you out come
Cheers
