Default rear axle oil seal

I have a 98 TI 4.5 petrol. The rear axel seal leaks oil into the brakes. I have had the seal replace by Nissan dealer in Brisbane, Melbourne, Pearth. and On Track 4x4 Brisbane. They all say it is just a trait with this model and that there is not much that can be done about it. The last seal was put in in August and is leaking again allready. Has anyone had the same problem and a solution
Regards
Cyclone

Yep.

2004 GUIII. Was picked up by the dealers at 20,000km.

Eventually fixed around the 80,000km service.

Solution: Whole new axle/diff casing, panhard rod, shafts and bearings. Fixed it. For once we could drive to the coast and not have the vehicle smell of burning oil.

Likely cause on your older vehicle would be a a twisted shaft I'm lead to believe. Possibly also a bent axle casing. For how long has it been leaking for? And quickly does it begin to leak from when you get the seal replaced (and is it only one side)?

Cheers

cant say ive heard of it before, but that dont mean much

few possibilities

- seal installed wrong - however that many places getting wrong - probably not

- axle shaft burred or worn where the seal sits - not likely unless someones done something odd with it in the past. you would have to pull it out to have a look

- when was the last time you had an alignment, i ask this because what was the camber on the rear axle, the housing maybe slighty bent - this is highly unlikely but the other two should have been picked up by someone by now.

It is a PITA but you need to determine exactly where it is leaking. By this I mean is it leaking where it seals against the axle, or the housing? Then do some checks. Does the bearing have an outer rubber ring (sealed or semi sealed) to keep oil away from the outer seal or is it open? Is the diff housing pressurising? Is it overfull? Is the housing bent? Is there a wear ring around the axle caused by a previous seal hardening and permanently marking it? If it is a continual problem it is time to really start looking for the reason, rather than wasting money by masking it every few months with a new seal, which you shouldn't have to do.

Also make sure the diff breather is clear and not blocked...if blocked it can force oil out of the seals as the diff heats up.
