Ordered a new set of rims and tyres today. 285/75r16 Hankook RT03's on Dynamic Soft 8's.
Pretty keen to get them fitted up and take them out for a test run!

33's fitted!
Factory flares had to go, but I have some flexi flares to put in place of them.
Unfortunately the tyre joint ordered the wrong rims, but that will be sorted next week.

New rims and tyres has transformed the look though, I'm loving it!

My 32s go well with the flare. Not sure if they are factory ones, but they look like factory.

Noticed some bad cracking around the LHF shackle hanger the other day, and a crack running through the bottom of the chassis rail from the hanger to the front end of the chassis. I was able to get it fixed up by one of my old man's mate's which was lucky since I'm leaving for a big trip in a few days.

Nice. Wondering where the idling hose connected to? Gq is in injector pump. Same as mq?

There is a line that runs from the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator to a vacuum solenoid on the firewall behind the main air filter housing and that runs to the idle advance unit, its attached to the IP on a bracket right near the throttle lever.

I was really impressed with how well the old MK ran up to Qld and back, I covered about 5500km and the only mechanical issue I had was the nut on the positive starter terminal working loose once, easy fix just nipped it up again.

I got it out onto the beach a couple of times too, having never driven on sand before I was wondering how the old SD would go on the soft stuff but I was pretty impressed. Tyre pressures were about 25psi the first time I went out and 20 the second time, and the old SD pulled really well, no issues with the cooling system either.

And a shot from when I went out with MQtray, GU2 and JFF45.

Gq is still my choice of weapon for long trips. Mq? Probably will be used as an Ute.

James - the truck looks great with the new tyres. What offset did you end up going with? I've had Dyna Pro MT's in the past on a GQ and they were an excellent tyre. Plan is to get a set for my MK soon, in the same size you went with, with a -22 rim.

Any further thoughts on getting a set of fibreglass flares? I don't really know what to do about flares for mine. Were the flexy flares cheap and easy to fit?

Not sure what James runs but I have run -22 almost from day one. Flexi flares are easy to fit , either screw or pop rivet with a small washer to add to the surface area . Pretty cheap of e'bay

Thanks Rich. I'm extremely happy with the DynaPro's so far, I haven't had them off road as much as I'd like, but on road they have been excellent. I've had 1-1.5mm wear after about 7000km too at 36psi all round. I went with a -22 offset rim.
I did come across scrubbing issues both front and rear after fitting the 33's, the front will require extended bump stops but I think the rear scrubbing is more an issue with the leaves I'm running (Dobinsons 2") since I had to pull the rear diff forward significantly to fit the springs and the wheel sits noticeably further forward in the wheel arch - maybe to protect the driveshaft from over extending, but they don't flex very well anyway.

I haven't done anything about the fibreglass flares yet. The flexeys were pretty easy to fit, I had to use 89mm flares, which protrude 80mm, on the front to almost cover the tyre and keep it looking legal. When fitting initially tried to just use the factory mounts, but the flares sagged sonI had to whack a couple of tech screws in which I didn't really want to do, but at least they're out if sight.

I've only taken one photo of it so far. And the interior was a bit dark so it didn't turn out great, but this is one of the main reasons I bought it...

Yep she's very early. Build date is December 1980. She's an N/A SD33 4 speed van. Interior is as basic as they get.

Hmmm.....That's the year I originally had and it was 24v.

Fun and frustrating all rolled into one vehicle!

Picked the old wagon up this morning.
It's in storage at a mate's house till I clear a spot for it in the shed.

I was surprised how well the old shorty towed it, considering the car + trailer was longer and heavier than the shorty. It was a bit slow, and I had to drop back a little on bigger hills to keep the EGT's down, but she did alright for an old girl.

Paint looks pretty good in the sunlight considering it hasn't even been washed yet and it's covered in dust.
