I'm beginning to suspect the same designation (ZD30) is two different motors.... I ask the question as my brother has a 2002 navara and I need to know what mods to do. WE'll be buying a lot of the same stuff I imagine.
I have a 2003 TD42TDi GU ute bought sight unseen. It's ex-telstra so I hoping its got a solid service history and maybe the GVM upgrade. Here my mods plan based on what I've read here; 1. boost and EGT gauge 2. oil catchcan from PCV 3. block off egr 4. 3" exhaust 5. pump tune/ injector crack pressure to 1800kpa I'm hoping for a fairly bulletproof engine that pulls 100hp at the rears and is economical (11ish L/100km) Whatcha rekon? neither navara ZD30 or patrol TD42T have a variable turbo so no need for dawes valve.
both engines you can block off EGR without any boost problems. info on navara EGR and butterfly mod Here. navara responds nicely to a bigger exhaust due to one very small rear muffler. however the common 3" exhaust is known to hit the chassis now and then when the motor rocks. catch cans are highly recommended for both motors.

Thanks tweak'e. Thanks for your input into this board too, where ever intelligent comment is found you are usually there. Good call on the catchcan- I'm looking forward to having a scrape around in the intake manifold to see how much crap is actually in there. OP edited to reflect comment.
