Default Cold starting with gas

My carby / points TB42 is a shocker for cold starting. I've recently had a gas service but this hasn't really helped. The gas purge system seams to be working effectively. Hot / warm starting is OK. I'm considering electronic ignition (and apparantly ventilated points are required on points dissys). This is a gas only truck.

I've heard that if you operate the throttle during cranking, there is a chance of a backfire which can destoy the air filter ???

What cold-starting procedures are being used ?

thanks in advance,
Dunc.

Duncan,
What type of priming system are you using? My last truck was a gas only vehicle, and was a bitch to start until I fitted a primer solonoid that pumped raw liquid gas directly into the manifold. I operated it via a push button that I used while cranking and she always fired first time. They usually wire them to the starter, but I did it that way because it wasn't needed when hot. The one second primer that works with the saftey switch just isn't long enough to supply the gas needed to fire it up. Also if it back fires when starting, your timing is too far advanced, a gas only vehicle should be timed at 12 degrees initial and 35 degrees total at the most. If the timing is right, it doesn't matter if you over fuel a bit, it'll just put out a puff of smoke and smell like a rubish dump!

Good Luck

Red face

I have the manual prime system. It wants to crank for about 15 seconds before firing. Do you press the botton once and hold it until the engine fires or press it a couple of times ??

I'll check the condition of my points on friday. I'll consider the electronic dissy. I suppose $270 is cheap in the long term.

Duncan,
I would press the button for about 2 to 3 seconds with the ignition on and hold it down until she fired. It usually took about one good crank to fire it up that way, when it was cold. It did make a lot of difference compared to not having the primer.
I also used electronic ignition, but I used a Bosch system, similar to what Chrysler used on their Valiant's and Centura's. It worked a treat with the gas system, but I had to re-curve the distributor to get it to run correctly.

I have a primer that gives a little petrol to start it. If I don't do it, it takes a while to start from cold. I also worked out, that if I turned the key to on and held the accelerator down for about 10 seconds, then got off it and turned her over, it fired straight away no probs.
I think it has something to do with the gas bleeding out of the big hose that goes to the carby from the mixer when left for a long time.

Have u checked the operation of ur choke. I give it 1 press 2 the floor which putts the choke on.U will now if its working it should rev up 2 over the 1000 rpm. Another jab & the choke goes off. I fire up this way in the middle of winter. If thats what u call it 26deg in coffs a the moment.not cold at all. Also $270 sound a bit steep.I like a lot of others Brougth direct for a company called retro rocket in usa.Goolge it. cost $126 2 ur door. Could be even cheaper with the strong au dollar. Hope this helps
