lots of info here about getting nissan to provide the parts even outside of warranty. Might pay to do that first, then maybe look at selling the engine as a complete unit.

As for which engine, how much does he want to spend? There was also a mention of some td43 crate engines in here somewhere.

Regards,
g@z.

if he dont tow a lot, the turbo 4.2 is probably better but if he tows a caravan or anything else frequently, i would recomend the chev for sure,

wont see much change out of 20 for a chev conversion i think you can do a 4.2 conversion for roughly 15

My mate has a 4.2TD for sale (see my For Sale ad down below on this forum) for $4,000-. Add to that another few grand to get it installed and he could be back on the road for $8K to $10K tops.

Go the Chevy V8 Diesel.

Probably the most expensive option you could find, but, I love mine !

Or your mate could give Nissan the flick and rebuild his 3.0 with parts from Engine Australia for about 4000 including a new head.

Just my thoughts and 2 cents worth, having had the opportunity to play with the chev diesel mainly the 5.8 and to a lesser degree 6.5. These engines are not noted for there realiablity. Our canadian friends will have some choice stories about these motors, but they are known for there low end off idle tractor like torque. For rigs like Roachie's which weight well past the 3 ton empty mark, this engine is a good choice as it brings back off idle drivability so making the rig a pleasure to drive in traffic, but also a very good medium speed toeing rig, due to its low end mid range high value torque. But don't expect to burn off V8's from the lights this they will not do, or even a warm turbo td42. Also they do sound nice if you can elimate the tappet rattle. Our very old very VERY realiability TD42 when turboed and pump mods will produce some very tidy torque and power values which is nice for toeing but with a very heavy van or load can be a bit tied when hills jump out of nowhere and you have let the revs drop to far out of the sweet spot. Also the TD42 doesn't have truck like torque off idle, But you will be hard pressed to find a diesel any diesel that can produce power and torque in a wide rev range like this engine.

But for the question asked here why wouldn't you consider a late model low Klm petrol AUS V8, Truck loads of torque and power good on fuel if driven easy, sound great, no rattle, realiable, easy to get parts and cheap compared to a chev diesel.

Has anyone thought of putting a (Ford f250 )Navistar 4.2 ltr in as a replacement? 500Nm of torque standard but, I think they do not meet polution requirements.

Thats what i've always wondered about the chev conversion. If you replace a 3ltr that has EGR/Cat converter/etc/etc with a motor from the 80's, how do you go with emissions? I dont know if its different for diesels, but i'm pretty sure in petrol cars if your doin a engine swap you have to have emissions equipment thats equivalent to the newest part (ie: if the car is a 2001, and the engine is a 1985 u gotta go with the specs of the car). Oh, and back on the original subject, go the 4.2td. I gotta 2300+kg boat and my trol tows it great.
