Hi all

Have a 2006 GUIV 4.2 Patrol, stock at this stage and are considering a putting a 3" exhaust on it.

Can I get some feedback from the guys that have done it, is it worth it, in particular were around Brisbane should get it done, what should it cost and what have people paid for it.

Do you recommend getting and EGT gauge fitted at the same time to monitor temps.

Thanks

Hi there

My Patrol is also the late 2006 model. I have had the 3" exhaust on from new. My mechanic in Melbourne uses the Beaudesert exhaust and it is very good. I called into the factory last Christmas and they are really well setup. get the dump pipe exhaust and EGT gauge plus tuning done. It costs about $1,400 all up. There are other options around but Beaudesert is close to you and they should do quick job.

SIMPLE... Beaudesert 3" with Dump pipe, no muffler = Huge difference. Should be under a grand, get the section where the muffler would usually go flanged so that way if DOT get a bee in their bonnet it is a simle bolt in/out arangement. Sounds great without being over the top, performance is fantastic - feel like a different vehicle.

then pump/boost tune with EGT and Boost gauge = Even Better!! In Brisbane can recomend Brisbane Turbo and Tuning (speak to owber John) did a top job on mine including in shop dyno tune. Called a power up for about $600 i think. Can tune for power, torque, towing, economy, safe boost levels, safe temps etc - whatever you want/need... i got 130rwkw on 35" muds with standard 3.9 ratio diffs and 992Nm torque @ 13psi. Never goes above 500 degrees even towing up toowoomba range with a full loaded camper! Usually sits about 200-250C cruising, idles down to 150 in 30secs.

Do it then repost with your feelings/thoughts :ahah:

I don't want to get into a slinging match with Benhl but I have a 3 inch Beaudesert system and at the time of purchase I asked the boys at B.E what advantages I would gain from leaving the muffler out of their system and they said absolutely zip. More noise was their answer as they said they use a top notch free flowing muffler.

My system was $930ish from memory, dump pipe to tail pipe. I did the pick up and install. I had one minor issue, not with quality but with one section of pipe given to me, (the N/A Gu's had a slightly different pick up point for the exhaust) and the lads were fantastic. Courier driver at my door before I could hang up the phone.

Beaudesert have provision for EGT's in all their dump pipes. If you are looking at tweaking then I would recommend the gauges. $300 for both gauges once off is cheap insurance.

I can't speak for all the 3" systems around, but I had ours done at Speedy Exhausts - Everton Hills (not sure where in Bris you are) for $600-650 about 2 yrs ago now. This is on the 3.0L, including a 3" dump, no CAT, drilled for the EGT, and a 'Genie' flow-thru muffler.

I can also say that other forum members have gone there too.

So far after 2 yrs - all is going good. :D

I had a 3" complete system fitted by Beaudesert Exhaust about 2 months ago now.

Best thing I ever did! Digga now powers along and breathes so much better.

Although you can have the complete package delivered to your door for a DIY, I recommend booking into BE and have the boys install it.

EXHAUST - $935 (includes new proper wastegate)
LABOUR - $125 (saves a hellavalot of effort and they have all the gear)

Hi Benhl,
How much was the tune up and boost gauge as I already have a EGT gauge?
I also have a DP chip fitted that I run on 8
I had a Beaudesert 2 3/4" exhuast fitted about 2yrs ago ($1100) when they fitted it they told me that there would'nt be any gain in fitting a 3" and that they recomend the 2 3/4"

Hi Grumpy
I have a 2.8 gu and justed fitted the 3 inch from scotts rods at yomanto picked it up and fitted myself for under $600 included dump pipe. His systems are a RAGE brand from NZ off the shelf for a 4.2 just made my engine pipe & dump to suit. As all the other guys say it makes a big difference.Scott is great to deal with and likes feed back on how it fitted and performance changes.

FYI had full 3inch STAINLESS system including custom 3inch dump pipe, 1 x straight through muffler installed last week for $850 cash.
You should buy 20 of them and sell them as they go for double that usually... I think they either didnt give you stainless, or fukt up.

I get anywhere from 6.8 - 7.5 km/lt around town and about 7.8 - 8.5 km/lt on H/Way in my "Auto" and when towing my 2t van about 4.7 - 5.9 km/l.
Had it dyno when DP Chip was fitted 118 Hp at rear wheels set on 7

I am very curious about these figures, 130rwkw it very high out of a std pump and only 13psi but is still possible I'm sure with an aggressive tune. 992nm on the other hand I think not, are you sure that's not a typo??? The TD42 is considered high when it sees around the 400nm and you are quoting nearly 2.5 times this. Please explain or at least post the dyno sheet to show us, cause IF 992nm is possible then all the V8 diesels are lacking somewhat.

Yeah I second that!!

For the $600 - $650 its a great mod, even sounds tops.

Hunter40 - PM sent

Fuel economy is about 14l/100km so about the 7km/l mark...

I have the dyno sheet here but only in pdf format so cannot upload can email if you like, the figures quoted are at the wheels so i imagine the torque is multiplied by the gearing ratios as are power figures and are inclusinve of driveline reductions. Yes it is a pretty full on tune and turbo internals have been modified also by Motsons (previous owner) and have been told that i'm at the very top end of the fuel pump capacity and anything further would require large plunger injectors etc etc... dyno performed in 3rd.

Just put a 3" on my older 4.2TD and it has almost completely removed the truck feel.

The work done was the exhaust, couple extra psi of boost and some minor timing changes. The extra power is great when towing the camper and passing slower vehicles is a lot less risky.

Best mod so far as I drive this truck every day.

Damn good effort ..
I have 3" all through, 13.5 psi, waste gate controller, adjusted pump timing, upped fuel delivery, EGR blocked, turbo mods and mine does 140 HP at wheels in 4th..... I can easily see 600 on EGT when I hammer it up hill and hold it there...

Cheers Mate - yeah was very happy with it. I also have the waste gate controller, timing adjusted, no EGR (thank god) due to being a pre intercooler model. Looking at roller/BB turbo next and one of Awil4x4 Water to Air IC's, no more fuel cause when hammered economy goes through the floor... just want it spooling up quicker/earlier and running cooler. basically insurance for longevity on this type of set up.

Gday
See attached graph of my 4.2. You will see that the kw is average for a stock car but you will notice that the nm are high. Does anyone know how Nissan get their figures.Cheers.

Ok the wheel torque is a different matter, I was thinking it referenced the engine, sorry my bad.

The 400nm I was refering to was calculated engine figures. 900 is not such a crazy figure now and in 3rd too.

My figures I have had done the last few times have either ben calculated engine torque in Nm or wheel torque in Tractive Effort in Newtons (sees more than 6000 in 4th), now I just need to calculate the N into Nm.

Hi Peter,

I'm also from Melbourne, and would love a bit more poke from my TD6

Could you please advise me on who you went through, sounds like you were happy with the result.

Thanks.
