Default DONT BUY mtz mickey thompson

well guys you might be able to tell from what I’m about to type up here that I’m really unhappy with mtz Mickey Thompson tyres

I brought my tyres about 15,000 kms ago after reading all the stories about them in 4wd monthly and other 4wd mags.

I thought great they seem like a good set of tyres so I went out and brought 5 at $350 each 285/75/16 off I went I was really happy with them at first as in sand they were great mud great and road well let’s say they were ok.

My 4wd a Nissan patrol was not long of the show room floor and only had about 14,000 on her.

Wheel alignment was 100% tyre pressure was at 38psi as per the factory settings for that tyre well so I was told by the fitters.

Anyway to cut the story short I’ve done 15,000kms on them and well have a look at this and you make your own mind up

O and another thing I rang the factory that sells the tyres and they said poo happens pretty much they said there is no warranty on mtzs and pretty much suck it up you brought them?

The wear looks nice and even. You will find they wear quickly but will slow down the lower in tread they get (it will harden). Most people only report getting ~40,000km from them in road use on the big vehicles like the Patrol and Landcruiser. Which is expected of the sort of tyre the MTZ is.

Do you really want a tyre which lasts forever? You can't have everything. If it lasts forever it'll have crap traction and the grippiest tyre out there won't last long at all.

I see no tread damage so I assume you don't do any 4wding which stresses the tyre. Perhaps go for a more road biased tyre next time, like the Mickey T ATZ? Actually no you probably won't buy them ever again. How about the Dick Cepek FCII?

I'd be stoked to have that sort of wear after 15,000km...I kill tyres and I don't even drive that hard. My current tyres only 4200km old are 3mm lower than when they were new (compared to the spare). Rears worn quite badly, little chunks torn from the edges. Basically its wear induced by 460NM of tyre smoking torque....

On the same topic, nobody buy simex centipedes, I've had my 35's on for 5 trips now and they are wearing out too fast, especially when I am lazy and don't change them cauz i'm going out wheeling again the following weekend!

I never expected that from a tyre that is designed around it's offroad capability, has large lugs and large gaps between those lugs and are on a car that weighs 2 ton + to wear out fast!

This is one of the quotes off that link
MiMine have travelled arround 12000ks and are getting close to half worn.

Not very happy with wear but extremely happy with performance (except the one i ripped the side out of)

Size is 285/75r16

Not getting them again, Really dissapointed with how the 285's are wearing compared to the 31x10.5x15's i had before- They went 40,000kms before getting to 50% tread

The next few wet weekends will see them hitting the discard pile I'd guess. We might make it to 110 k on them.

Certainly the Claws are an alright all rounder, but they do tend to tramline a little on grooved roads, either heavy transport indentations on the bitumen or grooves & ruts on the dirt. The MTZ's are better!

Big diferance between a Pede and a MTZ.

I would class a MTZ as a Road tyre, and as such would want a lot more out of them than that.

I don't know why every one is'nt running around on Bighorns
