noise transfer case

Hi I have a 2004 GU Patrol 4.2 diesel ,purchased sight unseen as was other side of the country & from a dealer on the road seems to be no real noise , but put into low range 4x4 upon slight acceleration of backoff there is a growly noise ,im new to 4x4 so hope someone can point me in the rite...
