Hey All, glad to be here and thanks for front loading my learning about Patrols with all the great info you’ve got up on the forum.

Rig is a gasser, ~15k km, good condition. Had it for 6mo or so, my first Patrol. I daily drive it most days, been impressed with its build and capability, will be pulling the pump off to add a tray. Suspension etc along the way.

Where is the pump driven from? I vaguely remember reading somewhere (probably on here) that the fire truck patrols use a different transmission and transfer than the standard Y60s.
@y60kuro will know the answer to that one.

Yep, apparently they sit on a MK chassis, they definitely come with the MK 5 speed. I learned the other day they have a custom bellhousing to mate the TB42 to the MK 5spd (after I learned they had that combo and got excited at the possibility of the later gearbox behind the SD33T, bit sad but oh well)
I’d assume they use the factory PTO spot off the back of the 5 speed, most of the gearboxes just have a blank bolted in.
Always fun to see a factory dual cab GQ.
Looking at photos on Google, it looks like Nissan originally just took the MK fire trucks and stuck a GQ body and engine on. The early GQ ones even have the same MK style guards and grille, same as early GQ single cabs.
Maybe we could get some pics from Sean of the chassis and diffs? I’d love to confirm whether they’re MQ or GQ running gear.
If he’s comfortable or willing to take more photos of course.
Looks awesome 👍

^^ That's right. MK/MQ transmission.

@Ethanissan Does the PTO come off the back of the gearbox or the back of the transfer case?
Back of the transfer, since it's offset, the front and rear driveshafts are inline with each other and the PTO comes out where a centre driveshaft would come out on a later vehicle.
I pulled the cover off the transfer of a 4 speed the other day and it's purely a gear-driven transfer. The PTO is straight out the back, the HI/LO mechanism is down on the bottom set of gears, and the front driveshaft engagement is in a small housing off the front of the transfer.
Just took a video to show:

When you strip all the gear off, your fuel consumption will halve and you could sell the scrap brass and copper to recoup your cost of the rig.(y) I;ve seen a couple of those locally, but the authorities demand the emergency lighting is removed before it is allowed into the country.[ in case someone else feels important too ] Good choice of vehicle,I have owned Patrols since 2000,and there are currently 5 in the family,so they are contagious.🙃

I may be wrong but some GQs had PTO winch. Jap import maybe?

I seem to recollect some Aus delivered GQ boxes had the blanking plate?

My MQ/K had a pto winch. Picture is Circa 1984-5 when it was new. Still got the plates on hold at the RTA after I sold my GU.

Fark I am getting old lol.

GQs were available with a PTO winch, and not just Jap spec vehicles. However it was driven from the gearbox (can't remember if from the input shaft or countershaft), not the transfer, LHS. Had it's own little F-N-R lever, and the winch speed/direction was not affected by gear selection in the main box or transfer.

Early GQs all had the blanking plate, some later model GQs didn't have it, some did even if they didn't have a PTO winch.

Amusingly, I have seen pictures of GQ gearboxes lacking the PTO blanking plate, but fitted with the drive gear for the PTO. And some that had the blanking plate, but not the PTO gear.

Thanks for all the input folks, good info here for me to research.

I’ll take some photos of the pto setup and pump.

I’m still debating on what to even do with the pump, hadn’t thought of the scrap idea to recoup costs. Was going to mount it to its own axle and be towable by a tractor for fire suppression or water distribution (or?), but with a new kid and other truck projects that sounds more involved than I may want. Open to ideas if anyones got them.

The trailer mounted fire pump sounds a logical place for it,but it will a good engine to drive it.I have a 1000litre IBC with a 2" Honda powered pump for my fire rig and it doubles as the tree waterer right now {summer here ]

HI there. Glad to see this Firetruck out on the road, or off the road!

FIrst thing I would question in creating a UTE would be the legal issues in the state you have it titled in. Yoy may to need ot research or ask around to see if inspections can be passed once you alter the vehicle. There is a guy on the Nissan Patrol USA/Canada Facebook page that has successfully completed the removal of fire equipment and installed tray bed over on the East Coast.

What year is your Safari/Patrol/Firetruck ?
