Hi Patrol guru's,
I just got a quote for my 120,000km service from FTG Nissan and nearly fainted.
$1,019... are they mad? I know its a big service, but surely their joking.

Wheres a good place in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne to get a service without being ripped off? (2005, 3L, Auto)

Thanks

and that would be without the auto trans fluid being changed! Thats mad yes, and normal. Thats why many of us do it at home, otherwise I could not afford a patrol.

Become mates with a diesel mechanic and cut the bill in half. And or find out what actually gets done to the car then do it yourself with a few mates and a carton of pi$$.

I'm 4k (4000) clicks away from my 120,000 service and that's what I'm gonna find out. Hopefully this topic helps.

I guess another thing to ask that will answer mikex2m's question is how much would it cost to do it your self?

Just my 2 cents

Cheers

That`s not bad for a nissan dealer. Here in Adelaide they ask around $1200 for a major service, that`s why I would never use them for a service. ARB Elizabeth service my patrol and they recently did a major service ( 80k and they order in genuine fluids) and that cost me $790. Maybe call your local 4wd specialist (ARB,TJM, Opposite Lock etc.) and get a quote from them, can`t hurt to try for the cost of a phone call. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm happy and capable of changing all fluids and filters, but are there any "special"
things to look out for?

Sorry would not spit on ARB Elizabeth if they were on fire, had a minor service done a couple of years back when they were at Gawler and asked them to check the fuel filter. Came back and about 2 weeks later had lots of black smoke and the fuel consumption went thru the roof checked the fuel filter and it was blocked full of sludge they had not touched it. He tried denying that i had asked him to check the filter until he read what was entered on the computer. Thats my little RANT cheers Mo P.S if you want it done properly do it yourself if possable.

Mate of mine was being derogatory about my gq. i pointed out that it cost me the same as the total cost of his spotties , nudgebar and rear sports bar:) on his navara.

He then went and bought a rear canopy, side awning and canoe rack with fitting, and still paid more than my gq :)

Then we discussed serviceing, his last cost $1200.00, mine I do my self cause I enjoy it and the gq doesn't need an anlyiser/diagnostic software etc . materials $150.00

But that's progress.

Approx costs from nissan apart from oils : dello 400 in 20lt drum and diff/trans oil for local auto supplier:
Filters: oil $34, Air $38, Fuel $46 Wheel Bearing Seals $75, Brake fluid $12, Diff oils $50, Trans oil (8lts does transfer case and the rest in auto trans) $67, Grease $5, Engine oil $50 Coolant (toyota long life) $75

total conservative cost of $452. Takes me about 5-6hrs, checking things as I go and greasing uni joints etc. Have i forgotten anything?

they are on drugs

My 2 Cents

Fluids/filters are all replaceable at home
Better yet, you can go full synthetic on almost everything except the rear diff for a fraction of the service cost

Oh, and even better, you can buy the necessary tools to make your job really easy again for a fraction of the service cost

I have had company cars for 10 years, and altough every fibre of my accountancy sense tells me to pay for the service, I still feel better
doing it at home
drinking a few beers
using superior fluids and oils with much longer service intervals
These are super easy to do

Brakes and discs and brake fluid are also very easy, but might be easy to see it done

The only things I tend to get done in a shop now days is
tappits
Shims
or something that requires my body in the engine bay

Should add

When I do it at home, I work out the difference that I would have paid, and then buy some toys for the boat or the car or the house or the shottie that actually makes me get value for money

Tjm Ballarat, all fluids, filters, diff, transfer, the lot, $450 TD 4.2.
can't see it getting as high as you got even with more service added, what more do you get in a 120000 service?

That kind of dollars is one of the reasons that my Patrol never sees a mechanic.
I always shout myself a bottle of Bundy or 2 as payment to myself for the job.

That is plain SICK. I was lucky to find a good mechanic that went into his own business and he does all my cars now and the recent patrol service cost me total $400. He only charges me trade price which is what he pays for the parts. He also keeps all the old parts and oil to show me afterwards, before binning it.

After seeing this thread and Nissan prices, i kinda feel really lucky and thankful how i get mine done..
