Hi guys and happy new year. I have 2 batteries in my patrol, the car is orginaly with 4,2 TDI Nut now it has 2,8 TDI But I noticed that 1 one battery has only the + connected the - is just hanging there. Do you know if the 4,2 has 24V starting or is is it 12V???

24V is when the - of the main battery is going to the + of the second battery,

When the + of the aux battery is going to the + of the main battery that is when there running in series, and im pritty sure that just gives your a higher CCA

Well my question was actually just. Is it 24v or 12v start in the 4,2 engine? Maybe I didn´t write it correct ;)

i think what jaido is saying is go have a look, if it is 24 v then the + that is connectedwill run back to the - terminal of the first battery, If it is 12 then it will run to the starter motor or some other place. Get it?

Apart from that i could tell you 100% either way i have a 4.2 and it is 12v but i think there is a 24v one too
hope that helps

I took a look and saw that is connected as 12V Just need to connect the - on the second battery. I´ll guess that the guy who switched engines had forgotten to connect the - the battery. But thanks for answers ;)

Quick check save confusion
If its 12 V
It will go "-" to earth, then "+" straight to starter

IF its 24 V
It will go "-" to earth, then "+" will go to "-" on the other battery then "+" to the starter

The volt goes to 14V but. i was just wondering if the original 4,2 uses 24V when you are staring her. Then runs on 12V Some cars have 24 starting system. But are running at 12V tha means that they wil only use 24v when the engine is staring up. ;) The raeson for the engine swap is that the guy used the 4,2 engine in another patrol. So the 2,8 comes from the car who got the 4,2 I would just kept the with the 4,2 and sold the car with 2,8 But anyway. After some lokking yesterday I saw that the car has only 12V :)

Did you read the part where he has a 2.8?
Yep, the way I see it, it was a 24v start 4.2, now it has a 2.8 with a 12v start that is why it has 12v neg and 12v pos to the starter, and the other battery is not in use, yes??
or have I lost the plot?:D.either way I'd be making sure before I hooked the other battery into the system, 12v starters don't like 24v.

The alt would have to be 12 volt. its the connection of the batteries that I am wondering about and would not connect them both until sure.

jeepson, are the batteries on the same side of the engine bay?

the batteries are on each side of the engine. But anyway It has nothing to with the altenator. Some car have 24V for the starter but everything else in the car is running on 12V But I was looking at it and I saw that the car didn´t have 24V start when the 4,2 was in it. Just need to connect - on the battery on the left side of the car to the boddy or the engine. And my question was actully just. Does the 4,2 have 24V start. It had nothing do with the altenator or anything. But thanks for all the answer guys ;)
