So i was driving along last night, stopped at give way sign, when i went to drive there was a large jolt and my 1st gear no longer works. So when in 1st its the same as being in neutral. So i'm guessing 1st is stripped and ill need to refurbish/get a new the gear box/gears.

Im wondering if i should do anything to strengthen the box/gears for 4wding (which i do alot of) as i've heard low range puts loads of pressure on the gears?.

And any ideas on what could do that to the box?. I'm guessing its just wear n tear? maybe the gearbox oil wasnt changed enough?.. i do have 33" tyers maybe that didnt help?. I do loads of big climbs when 4wding in low range 1st and 2nd.. maybe that as well?.

Ive done first gear on mine aswell

It is very common on 2.8 boxes as I found out after many calls to gearbox specialists.
There is nothing you can do to make it stronger as the only option is to put a new gear on from Nissan.
Buggering first is a PITA as it is the gear that sits right in the middle of the mainshaft, meaning all gears/ syncros the lot has to come off to replace it.

Cool thanks for the info. Hah would you believe that my drivers side door latch is also gone and the only option is also off Nissan for round $300 and it has to be ordered in!.. heh dammit

Was your syncro fine?

yikes man, lots of 2.8 threads popping up.
sorry bud, i think its more like you are just noticing the broken 2.8threads since you have had one, there have always been plenty of broken rd28's to go around. :(

i feel sad for you guys that have crap like this come and hit you randomly. its not good. -thus why i go easy on the rd28 crowd most of the time.;)

The small teeth on the gear itself for the syncro were all torn off, but the teeth of the gear themselves were like new. I replaced the gear and its been sweet for 35000 kms now. If my mate couldnt have rebuilt mine for me for a slab I would have just bought a second hander off ebay. Plenty on there.

Any advise on taking the box out... the workshop manual says remove the engine, but i've seen a few threads round saying loosen the mounts and jack the engine up rather then removing it?.

We used a quad bike jack toi drop it onto as it has a large square top to hold it and just dropped it straight out. When we re fitted we got a jack and block of timber and jacked under the harmonic balancer to push the rear of the motor down. It wasnt far maybe an inch. Went in fine. They are bloody heavy so make sure you have your wheat bix.

So, i've actually gotten around to fixing this...

It turns out my friends dog chewed on the electrical connectors to the gear box while it was out!!

Anyone got any idea where you can get new ones?
