So after having my motor rebuilt completely, and now the injectors done and thousands of dollars later, i still have black smoke out the exhaust.

When i asked the Diesel Specialist he shrugged and said "i don't know".

So no one seems to know... strange.

What to do?

So today I get my work light, and spent hours going over my engine, trying to see if anything is out of place. All private eye like, all i was missing was a magnifying glass.

It wasn't till i crawled under the truck, that i saw what seemed to be quite a significant oil leak at the turbo flange (engine side not exhaust side). I also noticed that i have a garrett turbo.. wow.

Do Nissan come with standard garretts?

Anyhoo.. Can someone please explain to me briefly the working of a turbo, it works on engine emissions right?

Oil at the turbo would explain my black smoke logic tells me. How does oil get there though?

Any constructive feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.


Finally a last word, for those who are scared of what lies beneath the engine bay, have a gander. Its quite fascinating stuff, Im slowly learning what goes with what and what does what.

Yep garrets are standard tonka, and on all Mercedes aswell hey?

Its a really good turbo.


from my limited knowledge, ... and i can always be wrong,
but have you checked your oil level,?
as even if you are 100ml over the max, it will shoot up into your turbo bro.


this is what id do...

I'd say dump the olschit,
new oil filter,

but this time use a aircompressor with a real thin nozzel to blow air into your oil pan, to get every bit out. After youve let it drain for at the absolute minimum 20 minutes.
have had it idleing for a while prior to dumping too, to thin out the
viscosity.

before replacing replenishing the oil.
wipe all excess and gunge from your turbo pipes,
and joins.
if its trickling near any connection ,
either tighten, or reseal , with a gasket or possubly some paper mache' LOLs.. you know what i mean !!

Then replace oil.

only put in 8.2 litres, and let it sit for another half hour.

then run for a good 5 minutes.

let it sit for another half hour, then recheck your dipstick about 10 times till you get a consistant reading,
and add 100mls in intervals, with large pauses and rechecking accordingly in between.

This is the only way you will get your oil level absolutely spot on Tonka.

and i'd hope to see the black smoke abbolished ,

So oil is NOT meant to flow thru the turbo.

err! oil IS supposed to go thru your turbo! your stock oil feed should have a proper restrictive in it. . . having to much oil doesn't really matter. . . . . as far as your turbo is concerned.

oil comes out blue anyway. Diesel is black, if you are getting to much smoke, it could be your injectors.

he had his injectors rebuilt. Maybe diesel pump. I'm guessing your egr valve is already blocked. And littlejohn 8.2 litres of oil for a 2.8 is way to much, these only take 6.4-6.5 litres.

Well it cant be blocked i just had the thing chemically cleaned 500km ago.

If you over fill your sump with oil, oil will shoot up into the turbo.. unnecessarily, through your into intake, and yes will blow smoke.

just quickly, ill be monitoring my ecu on the trip up, my temps shouldnt exceed 105c right?

Currently they sit at around 90's.

How much smoke? and when in the rev range is it happening?
You might just be over fuelling mate, make sure your air filter is clean then get a dyno tune and fuel adjustment.

Just be a little bit careful with your advice as he has the 2.8 engine not the 3.0.

If he puts in 8.2 liters of oil he'll have all sorts of problems!

Little bit of extra oil in a 2.8 is no bug deal.

Tonka I don't suppose you could take a picture of the oil leak?

i have a 2.8 gu and it blows it out of the arse end on very hard acceleration as my mate said pulling away from his suzuki vitara... this subject on 2.8gu is a tough one they all blow but how much??? id be worried if my 2.8gu didnt blow smoke honestly... my injectors are due tho for service and maybe injector pump, i reckon ill have em both serviced costing more than 2k and it will still blow black smoke but how much???

my 4b is mechanically stock i have bought donator chip several months before but havent installed it yet, i want to do it properly gauge it, zorst it ,chip it i.. i have no need for chip at moment as im happy with the power at moment and my at the moment funds have gone into the stuff i enjoy fishing n camping via dual battery kit n fridge by far this 4b accersory is the most ive liked,wanted,needed...

so think wiesly what you spend on if funds are limited but be warned easiest thing is buying the 4b and another story is maintaining it, ive spent a few thousand on mine and its still nearly stock and happy 4x4ing fingers cross so far without major mechanical issues...

ps: just get out there enjoy your gu... if your worried about your gu??? service your pump aswell and buy a new turbo and dyno it and check timing via fuel pump = $$$$$$$$= still blow black smoke ...


oh yer and my 2.8gu hasnt gone over 96deg on a warm day pulling hard on sydney F3 after rad rodded n stat... hopefully water pump will be right for a while as i didnt change it when timing beltkit was done

After seeing it accelerate from a standstill, it looks fine. Normal turbo pre spool black smoke. And as you said you can see it at night, thats normal too.


And I hope ya get bogged and flushed on Fraser!!!!
