Hi,

I have a '98 GU 2.8TD, stock sized tires, 2" lift, and 130,000 km.

Over the last few days I have noticed that under acceleration or under load the engine is intermittently loosing power, thus causing the 'juddery' power delivery.

I checked the MAF connection and all seems fine. Could it be dry connection as described here: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/474958-post60.html

Ideas?

Thanks.

a 98 with 130k??? it hasnt been driven enough! i'd look at cleaning the maf, resetting the ecu, having the injectors cleaned and a new fuel filter. with low k's like that i would asume that there is plenty of stale rusty crap in you tank and lines...

I drive about ~800km a month.

I change the fuel filter every 12 months.

The MAF gets cleaned every time I check the air filter, every three months or so.

I cleaned the MAF as soon as I noticed the problem.

Injectors are not a problem as the fuel economy is fine and there is no excessive smoke.

BTW How do you spin 35"s with a 2.8? Seem physics defying to me.

alrighty then... sounds like your on to it. any signs of water in your fuel?

& 35s turn quite easy with chip and exhaust.

:-( I feel for you, mine is booked in to Diesel specialist on 10th for I think a similar problem. Does it only miss under load, I mean if you're gentle on the throttle will it rev smoothly to say 4500rpm? but has complete misses under load? That's what mine is doing, it has less power then my old 88, 2H cruiser ute which is more than scary. I've cleaned MAF etc just that it had the front cam seals and timing belts done a couple of months ago and I'm wondering if the plate has come loose (saw a thread about that back a bit). I will let you know what the experts say about mine.
Cheers Paul

Blakestone, is the shudder only at a certain rev range. Mine used to do this ocassionally at around 1800rpm, and most times when pulling away from traffic lights if in the city. Haven't had the problem since I got rid of the DMF and put a solid flywheel in.

This is a separate problem to the miss/hessitation which the Patrol still has, and which can occure at any RPM.

mine had a similer issue a while ago and it ended up being the MAF not being plugged in correctly. Ours just wouldnt go any quicker at random RPM only under heavy use. it would not cough or anything just would go any quicker
I have been cleaning my MAF for years and have never had any problem but he showed me that i wasnt plugging in back in correctly and i havent had any issues since.
What i mean by not plugging in correctly is i was plugging it in until i heard it click (thinking i was done) but if i keep pushing it will click the second time and now i know it home. i'm not sure if its just a little wear in the connector or not because as i say i have been doing it for years with no issue.
Maybe you have a similer issue

Hi Gents, thanks for the reply's.

I opened up the MAF sensor at the plug and re-soldered the 3 connections, took it for a test drive, still hesitates under load. Cleaned the element again with contact cleaner.

Impossible1 - This occurs at random RPMs, at random times. It will surge with power as normal, then suddenly 'bog' down, then surge again - as though the ECU is 'loosing' signal.

Also I may have cleaned the MAF several times in the past with carby cleaner which my diesel fitter bro informs me may be a no no. Any opinions on this?

try cleaning your maf with contact cleaner, when it drys it doesnt leave any residue(sp?) like carbie cleaner would. Thats what i was told by a mech once. Its about $10 for a can from repco.

cheers

Troll went for booked inspection. There was nothing on the computer and after changing air and fuel (which I had supplied genuine parts) still nothing. They suspected it could be the pump actuator on it way out. They opened an inspection port on the pump and noted filings on a magnet or something.... The thing wouldn't play up for them even after several drives but played up for me on way home.
They have recommended pump revamp and no1 injector replacement.... I supposed nothing lasts forever, but I can continue to drive it until it becomes more of a problem. It's booked in again for 18th.....
Hope yours isn't the same problem now... maybe someone can give directions on where this inspection port/plate on the pump is so it can be checked for miscellaneous garbage.

getting your pump reconditioned is around the $2g from what ive heard, maybe getting your injectors serviced, think that costs around 500 mite be the way to go first? Sumtimes they just need the tip changing or cleaning out instead of replacing the whole thing? mite save you a few coin?

cheers

I'm having similar problem after changing fuel filter. When cold it blows blueish smoke and it seems like missing few cylinders. After warming up the smoke is gone but the shudder and missind start at 1500 rpm till 2000 rpm, after that drives normally.
I'v bleed fuel system couple of times and cannot find any cause of that. As my experience telling me blue smoke is a sing getting to little fuel. If anyone had something similar please help. I'v done 300 miles like that and problem is still there.

I have the exact same thing by the sounds of it, and apparently mine is the injector pump/injectors

Hey guys, how did you go with the 2.8 power surges? My sons is doing it now, and i would love to hear what you guys ended up finding out as to what was the cause.

Car drive well lots of power then for no reason and at any revs just dies - no more pick up!!! I have found if you lift the throttle and push it down again it seems to take off again OK!!!!

Look forward to hearing your responses. Cheers

Does the 2.8TD run a Pedal Position sensor? If so, possible clean of the sensor itself (with MAF Cleaner, not brake clean or contact cleaner.
Or swap it out for a "known good sensor" and see what happens?

The 2.8 uses fly by wire throttle and the throttle position sensors are on the accelerator pedal

Thanks guys, now not to sound to dumb - what is MAF cleaner???? Where do you buy it from? And are the sensors on the under side of the pedal? Do you just spray and wipe? Sorry, but my 4.2 does not havr any of this techo stuff ;) Cheers

Just a thought also if the sensor is buggered, what type/brand of sensor would you recommend? and from where? Cheers
