Wondering if I can use a 24 volt to 12 convertor to charge a small 12 volt battery? What to do that so can have a smaller convertor and still be able to handle bigger amp loads off the battery if need be. Trying to avoid a 24 to 12 charger as they seem a lot more money.
i have a 24 volt safari

I understand you have 2x12 V batteries connected in series to get 24 V output and want add third one as 12 V.

The simplest and cheapest way is to connect it to one (12 V side) of the existing battery of the 24 V circuit in parallel and use a little gadget called voltage charge equaliser to keep the batteries equally charged. As added precaution I'd wire VSR (voltage sensing relay) to disconnect the added battery if its voltage drops bellow normal so it doesn't drain main one.

This is used commonly on heavy trucks 24V systems to add extra 12V aux supply.

24V to 12V reducers don't work that well as chargers indeed the current output required on demand will not work that well e.g. they need load to supply output in simple term an appliance using power.

Regards
