Hi 1st post and a brit so sorry for daft Q
I am in the process of of planning a new project and it will be an off road buggy i was told the nissan patrol axels are the ones to go for and the 3.0 have lower ratios than the 2.8
can any one give me the ratio on what i should be looking for and is there any other visual clues to which i am buying. the axels will be at a breakers so cannot open up

I assume by the choice of 3.0 and 2.8 and the use of the term "breaker" you're from the UK?

There are a few different ratios and diff sizes available in Australia. The eariler (2000-2001) 3.0L had a H260 diff with 4.3 ratio gears, later down the track (2001+), the rear diff was changed to a smaller H233 still with 4.3 ratio. There were some that had 4.1 ratio, but these tended to be utes/pickups.

The H260 is quite large and noticeable against a H233 as for knowing the diff ratio without opening the diff, just count the turn ratio of the input to the output to calculate.

Oh and the VIN plate of the vehicle should have the ratio stamped on it.

Assuming he's not from Aus, I'd doubt he's talking RB30
