Hi guys,

I recently bought my first 4x4, a 02 Patrol gu ST 3L turbo diesel. It was working fine for about a week then all of a sudden it got real sluggish like it was taking off real slow through out the gears. I decided to turn off the car but when I went to start it again it didnt start anymore, the car turns over but it just doesn't want to start.

The injectors have been changed, the fuel filter has been changed, the battery has been changed and the air filter cleaned. The car has 176000ks with full log book history.

The only way I can get it started is if I spray abit of petrol down into one of the intake pipes but it still runs very sluggish.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry if I missed anything out I typed this quickly off my iPhone

G'day sorin_sideways, welcome to the forum :bigthumb:

Were all those things changed before the trouble began or after?

I would suggest that you have a read though this thread which explains how to look at the fault codes and get back to us..

Cheers,

See how you go with the error codes, it sounds suspiciosly like when the Injection Pump is playing up...

Hey guys sorry it took a while to check the fault codes. i had to wait 2 week for the car to be transported from Sydney to Brisbane. Now that i have it back i can work on it :)

Ok so iv checked the fault codes and all im getting is 5 flashes then a short pause then another 5 quick flashes. according to: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/niss...ference-document-zd30-owners-look-here-31418/ it means:
0505 No faults detected
Monitored circuits are operating normally

If it was the fuel injection pump would a fault code come up?

Yep, as Don said, if its a diesel, keep that petrol right away from it !

A mate of mine had a petrol Mav, bought a diesel D40 Navara, and after finishing a night shift instinctlivly went for the wrong fuel pump at the servo... luckily he realised and got it towed / drained before he started it..

Well I pretty much unbolted it, screwed it off then screwed the new one back on, primed the filter then hook the hose back on.
Hi Sorin and welcome,

need more info, but when you primed it...( the filter pump) did it get very firm or was it still relatively easy pushing the plunger up and down? You need to make sure the pressure is up as it will not fire and have to many air bubbles. Is the fuel filter sealed properly? is any air getting to the fuel lines prior to your IP?

This happened to me when I rebuilt the motor. I had to use the air compressor at the fuel cap end and pressurize the fuel tank to get the fuel up to the pump, with my mate pushing the plunger until it firmed up. Then she kicked over and no more issues. Also, I am with the others on this keep "petrol" away from your motor even the way you fired it up (really risky IMO)

Yes the plunger does get nice n firm but after a while it looses that firmness. Is that Normal? Today I took the patrol to Moorooka Automovie hopefully the good guys there can get it up n running :)
A trick I learnt first time i forgot to change over the sub tank and was in the middle of no where..

I spent 30 minutes pumping it then turning the car over then pumping it didnt and didnt fire once...

What I had to do is pump it until it was firm and then some more if you can. Then get someone else to turn the car over while you keep pumping like crazy while there cracking the car it will loose its firmness if you dont pump fast enough... The car started after about 1-2 minutes..

You should be able to smell the diesel also. Not sure where it goes but by 30litres turned into about 20 i reckon.

As above, change the MAF.

You can also check the MAF with a multimeter. if it's an early ZD30 ie before series 4, then check voltage off pin 1 by putting one probe into the back of the plug, and the other to a good earth. You should see 1.9V approx at idle, and 4.0V approx at full revs.

Pin 1 I believe is farthest from the air filter.

If you have a younger ZD30 then the output is on pin 4.

Hope this helps. If you dont get the right voltage readings then you'll need a new MAF. I would factor in replacing one every 100,000 kms to be safe.

You should check your fuel filter as some are different and the actual sealing rings are different sizes causing them to suck air, easy way to tell is swap hose from filter to pump with clear hose, also when you wind the engine over does it blow any smoke at all even a little and if so what colour. I had the similar prob with mine a few years back and found the filter housing had very small crack in it.
