so um yeah, just turned 18, went out and bought a 2002 patrol 3.0tdi manual st about a year ago. Spent 3 grand on "explosion" preventions but when it comes down to it, nothing going to stop it from going "bang". So I'm thinking of selling my motor and buying a 4.2TD but i have no idea on where to source a motor (preferably one with about 100,000kms on the clock) and where the best place to get it done is. I'm located in Melbourne and was just wondering if anyone knows prices and places.

cheers

I'd say rethink your approach for now mate. You've read too much on blow-up ZDs me thinks. There is no reason for the ZD30 to blow - normally - if you look after it and it sounds like you are already doing that. Doing a conversion is a great idea, but it's going to cost a lot, but it does give you a reliable set-up, if that's what you want but at 18 I'd question that ! If you're that keen then do some searching, you'll find all the answers you need for now, then get back to us know-it-alls with some sharper questions.

BIGLOU,
As Tracteur Tom says rethink your approach.
you've already spent 3 on the preventatives, I dont think you will get that much in return if you tried selling it, I suggest keep it and IF it "explodes" in 2-300 000 klm then buy your new motor.
Do'nt forget all engines can go bang, its not the exclusive rights of the 3 litre.

4.2 would be a little slow compared to the 3 litre:D. Not what an 18 year old with plenty of money would like either:D

if its still running, just sell it and buy a 4.2, it would be cheaper
I agree. I have just done this. Cost me $4K to change over from a 2000 ZD30 to a DEC1999 TD42T. Similar k's, options and condition. Although it did take me 12 months between selling the ZD30 and finding a suitable TD42T. You'll have to be patient if that's the way you want to go.
