So with 465,000ks on a 2003 model, just thinking today about what could go wrong mechanically on our next trip. Its something that's easily overlooked if it never give any symptoms. Starter motor is original and fine so far, never been touched but when is it likely to fail. I guess like any mechanical assembly, its really unknown.. How reliable are they on the 4.2TDi ? Thank you in anticipation. Michael

Wouldn’t think it’d be too difficult to remove, give it a clean, new brushes and for good luck a new solenoid.

If the drivers door hinges are worn badly then perhaps she's done lots of stop start and wouldn't hurt to freshen up or renew the starter

If it's done it's kays mostly on long trips and hasn't been under muddy water then it could be mint inside

If you decide to replace it I would recommend genuine only.

Thats the main issue with them, muddy water. If it's the on your mind, give it a once over or get it rebuilt.....
